Role: Senior Structural Engineer – Floating Offshore Wind

Location: Candidates with the Right to Work & Live in either Portugal, Spain or the UK considered

Sector: Floating Offshore Wind / Renewable Energy

Department: Structural Engineering / Technology & Innovation

About the Role

Green Scout is supporting an innovative floating offshore wind technology company in the appointment of an experienced Senior Structural Engineer.

The successful candidate will be responsible for technically leading structural analysis and design activities for floating offshore wind support structures, delivering technically robust and cost-effective solutions while working to project schedules and relevant industry standards.

This is a hands-on technical leadership position, combining advanced structural analysis and design with multidisciplinary collaboration, technical review and mentoring of less experienced engineers.

The role will suit an experienced structural engineer with a strong background in offshore, marine or renewable energy structures, particularly someone with experience in structural analysis, finite element modelling and dynamic loading.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead structural analysis and design activities for offshore/floating wind support structures.
  • Ensure structural solutions comply with project specifications, applicable codes and industry standards.
  • Develop detailed engineering designs and calculations for structural components.
  • Assess factors including loading conditions, material properties, fabrication constraints and structural integrity.
  • Conduct finite element analysis (FEA) and other advanced analytical studies to assess structural performance.
  • Identify opportunities for structural optimisation and improved design efficiency.
  • Analyse dynamic loading conditions and their impact on structural integrity.
  • Support fatigue assessment and the development of appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical and naval architecture disciplines.
  • Ensure structural components are effectively integrated into wider systems and project designs.
  • Review and technically check engineering deliverables, including drawings, reports, calculations and specifications.
  • Ensure deliverables are accurate, complete and compliant with project requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and support to junior structural engineers and other engineering staff.
  • Support technical interactions with clients, contractors and regulatory bodies.
  • Respond to technical queries, resolve engineering issues and support project approvals.
  • Contribute to engineering planning and ensure structural activities are delivered effectively within project schedules.
  • Stay informed of emerging technologies, industry developments and best practice within offshore structural engineering.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes, methodologies and technical capability.

Technical Experience

  • 7–8 years' progressive experience in structural analysis and design.
  • Strong experience working with offshore or marine structures.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA), structural modelling and dynamic loading analysis.
  • Experience working on wind energy projects would be highly advantageous, particularly offshore wind support structures.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful engineering project delivery within a marine environment.
  • Proficiency with structural engineering and analysis software such as:
  • STAAD.Pro
  • SACS
  • ANSYS
  • or similar.
  • Good technical knowledge of analysis software including:
  • FEMAP
  • SESAM
  • or equivalent.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in Python and MATLAB.
  • Good working knowledge of codes and standards applicable to floating offshore wind or similar offshore industries.
  • Understanding of dynamic loading and its effects on structural integrity.
  • Knowledge of fatigue analysis and associated mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge of advanced materials and construction methods used in offshore structural engineering, with a focus on durability and reliability.
  • Knowledge of CAD software for 3D modelling and engineering drawing packages.
  • Knowledge of PLM software for configuration management and change control.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture or a related discipline.
  • Specialisation in offshore structures, renewable energy or wind engineering would be advantageous.

Additional Requirements

Multidisciplinary Capability

  • Strong multidisciplinary engineering skills.
  • Good understanding of cross-functional engineering interfaces and the interaction between structural, mechanical, electrical and naval architecture disciplines.

Analytical & Technical Capability

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering data and make sound technical decisions.
  • Ability to assess structural risks and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Awareness of environmental considerations and regulatory requirements relevant to structural engineering.

Communication & Teamwork

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm, professionalism and a supportive approach to colleagues.
  • Comfortable providing technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers.

Planning & Organisation

  • Ability to plan and organise engineering activities effectively.
  • Able to manage own technical workload and contribute effectively to project schedules.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality engineering work.

Innovation

  • Innovative approach to engineering challenges.
  • Interest in emerging technologies and a commitment to keeping technical knowledge and engineering practices up to date.

Languages

  • Good professional written and spoken English.
  • Mandarin language skills would be advantageous.

Location

Candidates based in Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom will be considered.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to work on the development of next-generation floating offshore wind technology, contributing to technically challenging offshore structural projects within a multidisciplinary Technology & Innovation environment.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take technical ownership, work across multiple engineering disciplines and contribute to the development and optimisation of floating offshore wind structures as the technology progresses towards commercial deployment.
