Senior Traffic Engineer

Carrington West

My client is a highways, transport and kerbside strategy consultancy working primarily across London boroughs, delivering traffic engineering, parking and CPZ design, school streets, road safety, active travel and TRO/TMO advice. Their Design team combines civil engineering rigour with strategic and policy insight to help local authority clients deliver safer, better-used streets.
Role Purpose
This is a broad, client-facing role covering traffic engineering design, project management across multiple concurrent schemes, and the interpretation of monitoring and survey data to inform design decisions. The successful candidate will also be expected to flex into strategy and policy-facing work as their project portfolio requires.
Key Responsibilities
Technical design and civil engineering
·Lead and contribute to feasibility and concept design of highways, active travel and traffic schemes, including junction, crossing and cycle route design.
·Apply relevant design standards and guidance (e.g. DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20, GG142) to produce technically sound, deliverable designs.
·Use design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, QGIS and vehicle tracking/swept path software to develop and test layouts.
Road safety
·Assess and design for road safety, including collision data review, visibility assessments and the identification of safety interventions.
·Support the development of road safety audits, school streets and 20mph/safety zone schemes.
Data interpretation and monitoring
·Interpret traffic and transport monitoring data - including cycle route usage, turning movement counts and queue length surveys - to inform and validate design decisions.
·Analyse and report on traffic data using tools such as Power BI, translating findings into clear recommendations for clients and internal design teams.
·Design and oversee monitoring and evaluation processes for live schemes, including survey specification and post-implementation review.
Project management
·Manage multiple concurrent projects, balancing programme, budget and client expectations across a varied portfolio of local authority commissions.
·Coordinate site visits, surveys and consultation activity, and manage internal and external stakeholders through project delivery.
·Support bid and fee proposal development, including scoping, resourcing and programme input.
Client and stakeholder engagement
·Act as a confident, credible point of contact for local government clients, building long-term relationships across London boroughs and beyond.
·Lead or support public and stakeholder consultation, including workshops, surveys and written engagement materials.
Strategy and policy
·Contribute to strategy and policy-facing work as required, including transport strategy development, technical note and literature review production, and policy appraisal.
·Adapt comfortably between hands-on technical design and higher-level strategic advice depending on project needs.
Person Specification
Essential
·Degree in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
·Solid understanding of civil engineering principles as applied to highways and traffic schemes.
·Demonstrable experience of road safety assessment and design.
·Experience working directly with local government clients, ideally London boroughs.
·Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, on time and on budget.
·Confidence interpreting monitoring and survey data (e.g. cycle counts, turning movements, queue lengths) to inform design.
·Working knowledge of relevant standards and guidance (DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 or equivalent).
·Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or QGIS.
·Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing client-facing reports and technical notes.
Desirable
·Experience of Power BI or similar data analysis/reporting tools.
·Formal project management qualification (e.g. APM PMQ) or equivalent experience.
·Experience of TRO/TMO processes, School Streets or parking and kerbside schemes.
·Exposure to strategy or policy-level transport work, such as local transport strategies or technical literature reviews.
