Senior Traffic Engineering Consultant in London, Greater London

Our client, a specialist highways and transport consultancy, is seeking a Senior Traffic Engineering Consultant to join its Design team in London. The role will involve traffic engineering design, road safety, data interpretation and project management across a varied portfolio of local authority schemes. This is a full-time, permanent position with hybrid working, comprising three days in the office and two days from home.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and contribute to feasibility and concept designs for highways, active travel and traffic schemes, including junctions, crossings and cycle routes.
- Apply relevant design standards and guidance, including DMRB, Manual for Streets, LTN 1/20 and GG142, to produce technically sound and deliverable designs.
- Use AutoCAD, QGIS and vehicle tracking or swept path software to develop and assess highway layouts.
- Undertake road safety assessments, including collision data reviews, visibility assessments and the identification of appropriate safety interventions.
- Interpret traffic and transport monitoring data, such as cycle counts, turning movements and queue length surveys, to inform design and recommendations.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects, coordinating surveys, site visits, consultations, programmes, budgets and stakeholder requirements.
- Build effective relationships with local government clients and support public consultation, workshops, written engagement materials and technical presentations.
- Contribute to strategy and policy work, including transport strategies, technical notes, literature reviews and policy appraisals.
Job Requirements:
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Transport Planning or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Solid understanding of civil engineering principles applied to highways and traffic engineering schemes.
- Experience in road safety assessment and design, including collision data analysis and safety scheme development.
- Experience working directly with local government clients, ideally within London boroughs.
- Proven ability to manage several projects simultaneously and deliver work to agreed programmes and budgets.
- Confidence interpreting monitoring and survey data to support design decisions and client recommendations.
- Working knowledge of relevant highways standards and guidance, including DMRB, Manual for Streets and LTN 1/20.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or QGIS, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Experience:
- Experience using Power BI or similar data analysis and reporting tools.
- Formal project management training or equivalent project delivery experience.
- Understanding of TRO/TMO processes, School Streets, parking and kerbside schemes.
- Exposure to transport strategy, policy development or technical literature reviews.
- Professional membership of a relevant institution, such as CIHT, ICE or IHE.
