Senior Transport Planner
Sheffield
£40,000 - £50,000
The opportunity
A growing multidisciplinary consultancy is looking for a Senior Transport Planner to join its Sheffield-based team. The team advises private and public sector clients on transport planning and highways matters, and this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport professional ready to take the next step.
You will help clients at every stage of a scheme, from early site appraisal and local plan promotion through planning applications and conditions to construction and beyond. The role suits someone with a strong grounding in transport planning, traffic engineering and modelling, built up on property, land or infrastructure projects.
You will have the autonomy to run small and medium-sized projects independently and take ownership of key workstreams on larger commissions. Alongside the technical work, you’ll build relationships with clients and stakeholders, contribute to fee proposals and business development, and support the growth of junior colleagues.
This is a mid-career position with a clear route to progression and genuine support for your professional development.
What the role involves
- Delivering small and medium-sized transport planning projects independently and leading workstreams on larger, more complex schemes
- Preparing, coordinating and reviewing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans and monitoring strategies
- Carrying out and reviewing junction capacity assessments, and analysing traffic, parking, accessibility and travel data using specialist software and GIS
- Managing project programmes, budgets, risks and quality, and keeping the Team Lead informed of any significant issues
- Working directly with clients, highway and planning authorities, regulators and other stakeholders, presenting clear findings and practical recommendations
- Commissioning and managing traffic surveys, specialist assessments and subcontractors
- Contributing transport input to multidisciplinary and environmental projects alongside air quality, noise, drainage, planning and design colleagues
- Keeping up to date with transport policy, legislation and good practice, including sustainable and active travel
- Preparing fee proposals and helping to identify and develop new business opportunities
- Reviewing the work of junior team members and offering guidance, mentoring and feedback
- Following company health and safety, data protection and quality procedures
About you
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, Transport Planning, Urban Planning or a related subject (or equivalent professional experience)
- At least five years’ post-graduate experience in a transport planning consultancy, public authority or similar setting
- A sound understanding of UK transport planning policy, guidance and development management processes
- Hands-on experience producing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements and Travel Plans
- Experience of junction capacity modelling using Junctions 11 and LinSig
- Working knowledge of tools such as TRICS, TEMPro and AutoTRACK
- Competence in highway design, traffic, parking and accessibility analysis, GIS and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Experience of client and stakeholder liaison, fee proposals and business development
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to juggle competing priorities
Why apply?
You will join a supportive, growing consultancy where your contribution is visible, your projects are varied and your development is genuinely encouraged. With the chance to lead your own work, mentor others and grow with the business, it’s a great next step for a transport planner who wants more responsibility.
