The Opportunity

I’m looking for an experienced Service Operations Manager to take full ownership of an established engineering service operation. Reporting directly to the General Manager, you will have responsibility for the people, customers, operational delivery and full departmental P&L, leading a team of field service engineers and supporting staff.

This is a highly autonomous role, suited to someone who enjoys taking charge, improving processes and being accountable for the overall performance of their department.

The Role

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading, managing and developing a team of field service engineers and support staff.
  • Taking full ownership of the departmental P&L, including revenue, costs, margins and profitability.
  • Planning and coordinating planned, reactive and remedial service work.
  • Managing engineer workloads, utilisation, travel, accommodation and expenses.
  • Overseeing the service and spares operation.
  • Maintaining strong customer relationships and ensuring issues are resolved effectively.
  • Producing regular operational and commercial reports for the General Manager.
  • Analysing performance data to identify trends, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
  • Working closely with Sales to ensure service work is delivered effectively.
  • Improving processes, controls and reporting across the department.
  • Taking ownership of problems and ensuring they are followed through to resolution.

What I’m looking for

I’m looking for someone who combines engineering or technical understanding with strong operational and commercial management experience.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience within an engineering, industrial equipment, manufacturing or technical service environment.
  • Previous management responsibility for engineers, technicians or field-based teams.
  • Experience managing a mobile workforce and coordinating engineers across multiple customer sites.
  • Strong commercial awareness and proven experience with P&L responsibility.
  • The ability to understand revenue, costs, margins and profitability and use this information to make decisions.
  • Excellent Excel and data-analysis skills, with the confidence to work with complex spreadsheets and large amounts of operational information.
  • Strong organisational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to manage performance, develop people and create accountability.

The Person

You'll be a hands-on, commercially minded manager who enjoys taking ownership and getting into the detail. You will need to be comfortable managing people, analysing data, dealing with customers and making decisions, often in a fast-moving and reactive environment. I’m looking for someone who is organised, analytical, decisive and accountable, with the confidence to identify problems, understand the numbers and take action.
