Sheltered Housing Officer

Location: Newham

Hourly Rate: £18.92 per hour PAYE or £24.63 per hour Umbrella
Contract: 3 months initially

Are you passionate about supporting older people and vulnerable adults to live independently, safely and with dignity? We are looking for a compassionate, proactive and customer-focused Sheltered Housing Officer to join our dedicated Sheltered Housing Team.

This is an incredibly rewarding role where you will provide practical and emotional support to residents, helping them maintain their independence while ensuring their health, wellbeing and safety needs are met. Working closely with residents, families, healthcare professionals and partner agencies, you will play a key role in creating supportive and thriving communities within our sheltered housing schemes.

About the Role

As a Sheltered Housing Officer, you will be responsible for delivering a high-quality housing support service to older, disabled and vulnerable residents across our sheltered housing schemes.

You will build positive relationships with residents, carry out welfare checks, provide guidance on benefits and budgeting, respond to emergencies, and help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all.

The role involves working independently and requires a flexible approach to meet the needs of the service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out regular welfare visits and wellbeing checks with residents.
  • Monitor and update resident information using Telecare and housing management systems.
  • Support residents with benefit applications, financial wellbeing and access to additional support services.
  • Conduct inspections of tenanted and void properties and report repairs or tenancy breaches.
  • Respond to emergency alarm activations and coordinate appropriate assistance.
  • Support residents during illness, emergencies and difficult life events.
  • Complete support plans, reviews, risk assessments and emergency evacuation plans.
  • Promote health and safety compliance, including fire safety procedures.
  • Encourage resident engagement through social activities and community events.
  • Build effective partnerships with health professionals, social care teams, emergency services and community organisations.
  • Maintain the security and smooth operation of sheltered housing schemes.
  • Ensure communal areas remain clean, safe and welcoming.

You will have:

Essential Experience

  • Experience working within a sheltered housing, supported housing or similar environment.
  • Experience supporting vulnerable adults, older people or individuals with disabilities.
  • Experience using computerised systems and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong administrative and record-keeping abilities with great attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with empathy, professionalism and discretion.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to build relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Confidence in responding calmly and effectively during emergencies.
