Shift Operations Technician

Salary - £38,940 - £48,675 (plus benefits)
Hours – Full-time

As a Shift Operations Technician at FCC Environment, you will help ensure the safe, compliant and efficient operation of the site’s production activities. Working under the direction of the Shift Team Leader, you will operate an Energy from Waste high-pressure boiler, steam turbine generator and associated auxiliary plant, while undertaking first-line fault diagnosis and supporting maximum plant reliability, flexibility and availability.

What will you be doing?

- Operating the plant safely and efficiently during steady-state operation, start-up, shutdown and emergency situations.
- Working from the Central Control Room and on the plant as required by operational demands.
- Ensuring day-to-day compliance with the Environmental Permit and reporting incidents or non-compliance to the Shift Team Leader.
- Carrying out routine plant inspections, adjustments and operations, including collecting and accurately recording plant data.
- Responding to first-line and breakdown maintenance requirements within the limits of your experience and training.
- Supporting maintenance teams during maintenance activities, outages and prolonged shutdowns.
- Carrying out operational procedures to ensure the plant is in a safe and suitable condition to return to service.
- Undertaking simple analysis of steam-cycle chemistry and implementing appropriate corrective actions.
- Maintaining accurate shift logs, defect reports, operational work specifications and site procedures.
- Supporting outage planning, scheduling and coordination.
- Working towards multi-skilling across electrical, control and instrumentation, and mechanical duties, with relevant training provided.
- Contributing to a positive team culture and providing assistance to colleagues.
- Participating in site health, safety and environmental initiatives.
- Operating a counterbalance forklift truck, front-load mechanical shovel and grab crane safely, with training provided to suitable candidates.

What are we looking for?

- An ONC, City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 qualification in a relevant craft skill or process or thermal production operations.
- Candidates with a lower-level qualification may be considered where they have suitable relevant experience.
- At least three years’ experience within the power generation, Energy from Waste or biomass operations and maintenance industries.
- Experience of working with heavy process plant maintenance activities.
- A good understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements.
- IOSH Managing Safely is desirable.
- A good level of practical operational or maintenance experience and knowledge.
- A full understanding of process and instrumentation diagrams.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with a range of computer applications.
- The ability to work independently and take responsibility during changing operational situations.
- Strong organisational and interpersonal skills.
- A self-motivated, flexible and committed approach.
- The ability to work flexible patterns, participate in on-call arrangements and adjust working hours when required by the business.
