A well-established and highly respected construction contractor, operating across London and the South, is looking to appoint an experienced Site Manager to join its growing project delivery team.
The business has an excellent track record of delivering high-quality construction, refurbishment and fit-out projects across a range of sectors, with a particularly strong portfolio within healthcare and complex occupied environments.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Site Manager who has a genuine background in healthcare construction, particularly someone who understands the unique challenges of delivering projects within live NHS hospitals and operational clinical environments.
Previous healthcare/NHS construction experience is essential for this position.
The Role
As Site Manager, you will take responsibility for the day-to-day management and delivery of construction projects, ensuring that works are completed safely, to programme, within specification and to the highest standards of quality.
A significant part of the role will involve working within live healthcare environments, where construction activities must be carefully planned and coordinated around patients, clinical staff, hospital operations and other stakeholders.
You will be responsible for maintaining a safe, controlled and well-organised site while ensuring minimal disruption to the ongoing operation of the facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of the site and construction activities.
- Lead, manage and coordinate subcontractors, site operatives and specialist trades.
- Plan and coordinate works within live NHS and healthcare environments.
- Ensure construction activities are carefully sequenced around ongoing clinical and hospital operations.
- Maintain excellent standards of health & safety, quality and environmental compliance.
- Ensure all works are delivered in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, RAMS and programme requirements.
- Manage site logistics, access, deliveries, storage and working areas within often restricted and operational environments.
- Coordinate multiple trades and workstreams simultaneously.
- Liaise effectively with clients, consultants, hospital representatives, clinical teams and other stakeholders.
- Attend and contribute to site meetings and progress meetings.
- Monitor progress against programme and proactively identify potential delays or issues.
- Review and monitor subcontractor performance, workmanship and productivity.
- Deliver site inductions, toolbox talks and regular briefings.
- Ensure RAMS, permits and other site documentation are implemented and maintained.
- Maintain accurate site records, diaries, progress reports and quality documentation.
- Identify and manage risks associated with working within occupied and operational buildings.
- Work closely with the Project Manager and wider project team to ensure successful project delivery.
- Ensure the completed works meet the required quality standards and are handed over efficiently.
The successful candidate must have demonstrable previous experience delivering construction, refurbishment or fit-out projects within healthcare environments.
In particular, we are looking for someone who has experience of:
- Working within live NHS hospitals or healthcare facilities.
- Managing construction activities around patients, clinicians and hospital staff.
- Working within operational clinical environments where the building must remain fully or partially operational throughout the works.
- Hospital refurbishment and fit-out projects.
- Working within sensitive areas such as wards, theatres, critical care, diagnostic areas, treatment rooms or other clinical environments.
- Managing restricted access, complex site logistics and multiple interfaces.
- Coordinating works around clinical requirements and hospital operational constraints.
- Understanding the importance of infection control, dust/noise management and maintaining safe separation between construction and clinical areas.
- Liaising with NHS Estates teams, clinical representatives and other healthcare stakeholders.
- Managing subcontractors and specialist trades within a highly controlled environment.
About You
You will be an experienced and confident Site Manager with a strong construction background and, importantly, a proven track record within the healthcare sector.
You will need to be comfortable taking ownership of a site, managing multiple subcontractors and dealing confidently with clients and stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will be:
- An experienced Site Manager within a main contractor environment.
- Able to demonstrate a strong portfolio of healthcare/NHS projects.
- Experienced in refurbishment, fit-out and/or complex construction projects.
- Confident working within live and occupied environments.
- Strong on health & safety and quality.
- Highly organised with excellent attention to detail.
- A strong communicator with the ability to manage different stakeholders.
- Capable of planning and coordinating multiple trades and activities.
- Commercially aware and programme-focused.
