An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Civil Engineering Site Manager to join an established and growing civils and groundworks contractor on a major project at South Dock Marina, London.

The position will initially be offered on a day-rate basis of £250–£300 per day. After an initial three-month period, there will be the opportunity to move into a permanent position, subject to both parties being happy.

The contractor is delivering the civil engineering and groundworks package alongside a major main contractor, operating under an NEC4 subcontract.

The package incorporates a broad range of works including site clearance, bulk and detailed excavation, drainage, utilities, reinforced concrete, paving and surfacing. This represents an excellent opportunity for a Site Manager with a strong all-round civils and groundworks background.

The Role:

Reporting to the Contracts Manager / Project Manager, you will take day-to-day responsibility for the safe and successful delivery of the civils and groundworks package, ensuring works are completed safely, to programme, specification, quality standards and budget.

You will act as the principal point of contact for the civils contractor on site, working closely with the main contractor, Site Engineer, Site Supervisor, subcontractors and other stakeholders.

You will be responsible for planning, managing and supervising all civil engineering and groundworks activities, including site clearance, bulk and detailed excavation and disposal.

The package includes surface water and foul drainage incorporating pipes, manholes, gullies, channels, attenuation tanks and oil separators, together with utilities ducting and draw pits.

You will also oversee reinforced concrete works including slabs, strip and pad foundations, lift pits and substation bases and roof, alongside substation brickwork, block paving and asphalt surfacing.

The Site Manager will take ownership of health, safety and environmental performance, ensuring works are delivered in accordance with CDM 2015. This will include producing and briefing task-specific RAMS and POWRAs and running daily site briefings.

Working within an NEC4 environment, you will manage sequencing, key dates, progress and early warnings and attend regular coordination and progress meetings with the main contractor and wider project team.

You will coordinate temporary works with the Temporary Works Coordinator and ensure appropriate safe systems of work are maintained throughout the project.

Quality will form an important part of the position. You will manage works through the Inspection & Test Plan, arrange hold and witness points and coordinate testing including concrete sampling, drainage air and water tests, CCTV surveys and CBR testing.

You will also manage labour, subcontractors, plant, materials, deliveries, storage and site logistics while maintaining accurate site records using InnDex.

Environmental responsibilities will include managing dust, silt, noise, fuel and spill risks, wheel washing and waste Duty of Care requirements.

You will liaise with the main contractor, utility providers and Southwark Council where required, while supporting the production of as-built records, O&M documentation and final project handover.

Candidate Requirements:

Applicants should have proven experience working as a Site Manager within civil engineering and groundworks and be capable of taking day-to-day responsibility for a substantial subcontract package.

You should have strong practical experience of deep drainage, attenuation, reinforced concrete structures, utilities, excavation and external works.

Previous experience working under NEC contracts is highly desirable, alongside a good working knowledge of NEC4 and CDM 2015.

Candidates must hold a valid SMSTS qualification, CSCS Manager / Black Card and First Aid at Work certification, together with the right to work in the UK.

Additional qualifications such as Temporary Works Coordinator, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, NRSWA Streetworks Supervisor and Confined Spaces would be advantageous.

An HNC, HND or degree in Civil Engineering would also be beneficial but is not essential where candidates can demonstrate the required level of practical site management experience.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Civils Site Manager to take responsibility for a technically varied groundworks package on a significant London project.

The role will initially pay £250–£300 per day, with the intention of moving the successful candidate into a permanent position after three months, subject to both parties being happy.

Working hours are Monday to Friday, 07:30–17:30.
