Skilled Train Maintainer
Location: Leeds, West Yorkshire
Rate: £39.91 per hour (Inside IR35)
Contract Length: 6-9 Months
Hours: Flexible working required across mornings, afternoons, nights and weekends.
About the Role
We are currently recruiting for experienced Skilled Train Maintainers to undertake the servicing, maintenance, repair, fault finding and overhaul of rolling stock, traction equipment and associated components. This is a hands-on engineering role working within a depot environment, ensuring rail vehicles are maintained to the highest standards of reliability and performance.
The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out maintenance activities in accordance with established engineering standards and technical specifications while supporting operational requirements and service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Work under the direction of the Team Leader and undertake assigned maintenance activities within your level of competence.
- Perform servicing, maintenance, repair and overhaul of rolling stock, traction equipment and associated components.
- Diagnose and rectify mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic faults.
- Complete all maintenance documentation and sign off completed work accurately, identifying any outstanding actions where required.
- Report defects, additional work requirements and technical issues to the Team Leader.
- Carry out minor repairs to plant and depot equipment as required.
- Apply mechanical, electrical, vehicle building and plumbing principles to maintenance activities.
- Obtain, use, maintain and return tools, testing equipment and instruments in accordance with depot procedures.
- Source and collect materials and components from stores as required.
- Operate authorised plant and equipment in accordance with training and competency certification.
- Support workload delivery by assisting colleagues and undertaking additional duties where competent to do so.
- Provide guidance and support to apprentices, trainees and new team members.
- Undertake patch painting and surface preparation activities where trained and competent.
- Carry out welding, brazing and burning activities where appropriately qualified.
- Perform air conditioning maintenance activities where trained and authorised.
- Maintain a clean, organised work environment at all times.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Applicants should be able to demonstrate:
- Relevant engineering experience within a rail, rolling stock, heavy maintenance, manufacturing or similar environment.
- Competence in mechanical and electrical maintenance principles and practices.
- Understanding of pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems and the ability to interpret technical schematics and drawings.
- Experience of fault finding and diagnostic techniques.
- Ability to safely operate mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical instructions, maintenance procedures and engineering documentation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative when required.
- Willingness to undertake additional training and competency assessments as required.
Essential Requirements
- Engineering background with relevant mechanical and/or electrical competencies.
- Experience maintaining rolling stock, rail vehicles, heavy plant, industrial machinery or similar equipment.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to work a flexible shift pattern including mornings, afternoons, nights and weekends.
- Commitment to maintaining high engineering standards.
- Ability to successfully complete role-specific competency training.
