Skipper – 6 Month Contract Opportunity The Opportunity We are currently recruiting for an experienced Skipper to support the testing, validation and development of an innovative marine propulsion system for a 6 month basis in Lowestoft.

This is a hands-on contract opportunity with a pioneering marine engineering business developing next-generation propulsion technology. You will play an important role in on-water testing, operating company vessels and working closely with engineers and technicians to support development programmes.

The role would suit an experienced commercial Skipper who is confident operating RIBs or similar vessels and enjoys working in a technical, fast-paced testing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Safely operate company vessels in support of testing and development programmes.

  • Take command of vessels and maintain responsibility for the safety of all personnel on board.

  • Brief passengers and crew and ensure all relevant safety procedures are followed.

  • Carry out vessel manoeuvring, docking and close-quarter operations to a high standard.

  • Ensure vessels are secured, maintained and ready for operation.

  • Comply with maritime legislation, local regulations and company procedures.

  • Support engineers and technicians during on-water testing and trials.

  • Maintain accurate operational records and report any issues affecting vessel performance or safety.

  • Travel to alternative facilities, suppliers or customer locations when required.

  • Support workshop and test facility activities as required.

  • Maintain high standards of Health & Safety and promote a proactive safety culture.

  • Undertake other reasonable duties in support of testing and operational requirements.

Skills & Experience Essential
  • Proven experience skippering RIBs, tenders or similar vessels of approximately 12 metres.

  • Strong understanding of vessel operations, marine safety procedures and maritime regulations.

  • Commercial experience operating vessels.

  • Ability to work effectively within a small, dynamic and fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to understand technical documentation and operational procedures.

  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Desirable
  • Experience supporting marine testing, development or engineering activities.

  • Experience operating high-performance test vessels or development craft.

  • Marine engineering or technical knowledge.

  • Telehandler Licence.

Qualifications & Certifications
  • Yachtmaster – Commercially Endorsed

  • VHF Short Range Certificate

  • First Aid Certificate

  • ENG1 or ML5 Medical

  • Personal Survival Techniques (PST)

  • Full UK Driving Licence and own transport

Contract Details Location: Lowestoft

Contract: Minimum six-month contract

Rate: Dependent on experience, qualifications and suitability.

Working Pattern The role operates around a two-shift system, with typical hours of:

  • 06:00 – 13:30

  • 13:15 – 23:30

Shift patterns may vary depending on testing requirements, weather conditions and operational priorities.

Occasional weekend working may be required.
