Structural Engineer

The structural engineer is responsible for the quality of the technical work they produce and managing technicians. They will coordinate with other engineers and technicians in their team and the wider company to manage workload.
 
They will work to company procedures and QA systems and support admin staff in the same. They are responsible for all the safety, commercial and customer facing aspects of their role and will report on these aspects against their targets, to their team leader and MD at agreed timescales.
 
This role incudes supporting the MD with the growth of the business and carrying out additional duties as required.
 
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
 
Personal
Supervision of and mentoring junior engineers and technicians.
Management of personal workload and ensuring submission dates are adhered to.
Management of personal work quality and ensuring design checks are completed before submission.
 
Technical
Structural Engineer role on designated projects.
Undertake structural design using proprietary design software for timber/Steel/Concrete/Masonry. Prepare calculations adequate for submission to Building Control and in line with current GSE codes of practice.
Undertake calculations and designs using an efficient and rationalised process under guidance as necessary.
Initiate technical design drawings (General Arrangements, sections and details) and supervise draftsperson in production of drawings.
Checking of drawings and calculations prepared by colleagues.
Attend Design Team meetings and interface with external stakeholders (clients and design team). In conjunction with the design team, assist in the scheme design/value engineering of each project to ensure the client requirements are met by the most viable option.
Respond to RFI's from site and design team in agreed time frames.
Site attendance and representation when necessary to confirm adherence to construction specifications.
Site attendance and inspection to monitor construction progress and confirm safety standards. Understand responsibilities under CDM regulations.
 
Commercial
Understand role within design team and timescales available for undertaking required works. Understand and appreciate the role of the other members of the design team (Client, Architect, M&E Engineer, external stakeholders)
Understand the required programme, co‐ordination, communication and GSE involvement within project to ensure satisfactory delivery of a project.
Assisting with credit control when necessary.
Be aware of and make best endeavors to meet project deadlines and allocated time to work items.
 
Marketing and Tendering
Promote business to existing clients and potential new clients with a view to increasing new enquiries and opportunities.
Responding to new enquiries and completing quotes for new jobs as allocated.
Present quotes for sign off to the MD for projects in excess of an agreed value.
 
Business Controls
Complete time sheet by 9:30 Monday morning.
Complete workload programming on a weekly basis in preparation for the Monday morning programming meeting and attend the same.
Attend & contribute at company meetings on a monthly basis.
Accurate data input into resourcing software when setting up a new job and on existing jobs.
Ensure projects are fully closed and archived in a timely manner.
Provide information to the QA manager as required.
Understand and implement Quality procedures at project level.
Assist in the issue of project documents.
Report Non‐Conformances to the line manager and QA manager.
 
Business Improvement
Implement GSE's CDM procedures for their team.
Attend relevant training seminars when necessary and present key points to colleagues.
Keep up to date with changes in legislation, codes of practice, design codes and proprietary suppliers.
Maintain and develop technical or management capability through CPD - chiefly through graduate membership of either ICE or IStructE and attendance at GSE CPDs.
Supporting senior staff and management with quality improvement processes and other duties.
