Supply Teacher
A Wilderness Way · Direct employer
Some of our children have been let down by education before. This role is about showing them it can be different.
For a few of the children we support, a classroom has never felt like a safe or welcoming place and understandably, they’ve switched off from learning altogether. We’re looking for someone to gently change that: to work one-to-one with the children who currently find education hardest, rebuild their trust, and help them rediscover that learning can be something they actually enjoy.
This isn’t classroom teaching. It’s learning that happens out in the community and in the great outdoors, through ASDAN projects, life skills, trips and hands-on activities, with English and Maths woven in along the way (think working out measurements over a baking tray, or speed and distance with a set of toy cars). It takes patience, creativity and a genuine belief in every child. You’ll be a qualified teacher, HLTA or TA, but what matters just as much is your ability to build a real relationship with a young person who’s lost faith in learning.
What you’ll do
- Work one-to-one with some of our most disengaged children, building trust and helping them re-engage at a pace that’s right for them
- Deliver practical, real-world learning, ASDAN projects, independent-living and life skills, trips and hands-on activities
- Bring English and Maths (Entry Level 1–3) to life through everyday, practical tasks rather than formal lessons
- Think on your feet, having a plan B (and C..) ready for the days a child isn’t feeling it
- Work closely with our Education Leads and the care team around each child to keep everything joined up
- Capture the small wins, the evidence and progress that show a child just how far they’ve come
This role could suit you if you
- Can build a genuine connection with young people who’ve had a tough relationship with education
- Are creative, patient and unflappable, happy to swap the plan for a baking session or a trip when that’s what works today
- Believe learning is about far more than exams
- Are a qualified teacher, or bring relevant experience from teaching support (HLTA/TA), youth work, alternative provision or a similar background
- Enjoy working practically, outdoors and out in the community
You won’t be doing it alone
Our Senior Education Leads will guide you day-to-day - letting you know which children you’re supporting each week and you’ll work hand-in-hand with the Education Leads who plan the learning. There’s a whole team around every child, and you’ll be part of it.
What’s in it for you?
- 24/7 employee assistance and counselling programme
- “Above and Beyond” recognition scheme
- Medical benefit scheme + staff discounts
- Amazing peer and team support
- A chance to change lives, every single day
Must have a full UK manual driving licence and your own car - travel between services is a key part of this role.
