Surfacing Supervisor - Highways

Upfront Recruitment

Surfacing Supervisor

Salary: £45,000 to £56,000 Basic + Overtime + company van + fuel + excellent overtime rates
Location: Manchester / North West England
Position: Full-time, Permanent

We are recruiting an experienced Surfacing Supervisor for a long-established North West civil engineering and highways contractor specialising in asphalt surfacing, resurfacing, highway maintenance and associated civil engineering works.

This is a hands-on operational role for somebody who knows surfacing properly. You will need a strong understanding of machine-laid carriageway surfacing, hand lay, footway works and general highway works, alongside the ability to organise labour, run multiple sites and maintain the standards expected on live highways projects.

The company offers a strong basic salary alongside excellent overtime rates, giving an experienced Surfacing Supervisor the opportunity to significantly increase their overall earnings.

The Package

  • £45,000 – £56,000 per annum, depending on experience

  • Company van + fuel

  • Excellent overtime rates with scope to increase annual earnings

  • 25 days' holiday + bank holidays

  • Life insurance / Death in service

  • Permanent position with an established North West contractor

About the Company

The business has more than 50 years' experience within highways and civil engineering and provides services across surfacing, highway maintenance and civil engineering.

Unlike contractors that rely heavily on subcontracted delivery, the business operates with its own in-house teams, specialist plant and equipment and established asphalt and recycling facilities. Its work includes carriageway resurfacing, machine-lay surfacing, highway maintenance, footways, milling/planing and associated civil engineering works.

The company has continued to invest in its people, plant and operational capability and operates to recognised quality, environmental and health and safety standards.

About the Role

The Surfacing Supervisor will take responsibility for organising and supervising surfacing and highway works across various sites throughout the North West.

You will be expected to understand what good surfacing looks like, plan the work properly and make sure gangs, labour, materials and plant are organised effectively.

This is not a position for somebody whose experience is purely general construction supervision. The successful person needs genuine asphalt surfacing and highways experience and must be comfortable managing both machine-lay and hand-lay operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Run and manage multiple surfacing, resurfacing and highway maintenance sites

  • Supervise and organise surfacing gangs, operatives, labour, plant and site resources

  • Oversee machine-laid carriageway surfacing, hand lay and footway works

  • Plan works to maintain productivity, programme, quality and highway compliance

  • Coordinate with management, site teams and other parties to keep works progressing safely and efficiently

  • Maintain commercial awareness around labour, plant, materials, productivity and the overall performance of each site

What We're Looking For

You will need proven experience within road surfacing, asphalt, highways or highway maintenance, ideally working as a Surfacing Supervisor, Highways Supervisor, Surfacing Foreman or similar.

You should have:

  • Strong practical knowledge of asphalt surfacing and resurfacing

  • Experience with machine-lay carriageway surfacing

  • Good knowledge of hand-lay surfacing and footway works

  • A sound understanding of highway working practices, compliance and site safety

  • Experience organising and managing surfacing gangs, operatives and labour

  • The ability to run several sites while remaining commercially aware

The key requirement is genuine surfacing knowledge. You should be able to walk onto a live surfacing operation, understand how the job should be planned and delivered, organise the workforce and identify when something is not being done correctly.

An experienced Surfacing Foreman already running gangs and taking responsibility for jobs may also be worth considering if you are ready to move into a broader Surfacing Supervisor position.

Why Consider This Role?

For somebody who knows the surfacing industry, this offers a good combination of basic salary, overtime earning potential, responsibility and long-term employment with an established contractor that has its own operational capability rather than simply managing subcontractors.

You will be joining a business with decades of experience in North West highways, significant investment in specialist plant and equipment, and an established presence across surfacing and highway maintenance.
