As the Sustainability Manager, you are responsible for leading sustainability, retrofit and decarbonisation programmes, including the strategic management, optimisation, and improvement of communal and district heat networks. The role ensures that homes become more energy‑efficient, environmentally responsible and aligned with national and organisational carbon‑reduction targets.

Description

As the Sustainability Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Lead the development and delivery of sustainability, energy‑efficiency, and decarbonisation programmes, including whole‑house retrofit and low‑carbon heating solutions.
  • Develop and implement strategies to support long‑term net‑zero objectives and environmental compliance.
  • Lead the strategic oversight, optimisation, and decarbonisation of communal and district heat networks, ensuring performance, reliability, resident satisfaction, and regulatory compliance.
  • Work with technical colleagues to assess heat network condition, energy losses, maintenance requirements, and long‑term upgrade needs.
  • Identify and secure external funding opportunities such as SHDF, ECO, Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES), or other decarbonisation grants.
  • Lead bid development, application processes, evidence submissions, and financial monitoring for funded projects.
  • Work with Asset Management, Building Safety, Fire Safety, Repairs, Development and Finance teams to integrate sustainability and heat network priorities into long term investment planning.
  • Prepare high‑quality reports on programme performance, heat network efficiency, carbon impact, financial progress, and strategic targets.
  • Track KPIs across retrofit, decarbonisation and heat network projects, ensuring continuous improvement.

Profile

A successful Sustainability Manager will need:

  • Degree‑level qualification in a relevant field, such as:
    • Environmental Sustainability
    • Energy Management
    • Building Services Engineering
    • Construction / Built Environment
    • Asset Management
    • Retrofit / Energy Modelling
  • Professional qualification or accreditation in energy efficiency or retrofit, for example:
    • Domestic Energy Assessor (DEA)
    • Non‑Domestic Energy Assessor (NDEA)
    • Retrofit Assessor / Retrofit Coordinator / Retrofit Designer (PAS 2035)
    • Level 3 or 4 Award in Energy Efficiency / Retrofit
  • The ability to get to London on a regular basis
  • Experience managing retrofit, energy efficiency or sustainability programmes in housing, property, construction, or environmental sectors.
  • Experience leading teams or managing specialists, contractors, or consultants.
  • Proven experience securing and managing sustainability funding (e.g., SHDF, ECO, LAD, HUG).
  • Experience overseeing technical designs, retrofit assessments, energy modelling, and installation programmes.
  • Demonstrable experience interpreting EPC data, stock condition information, and carbon reduction modelling.
  • Experience engaging with residents in the context of property works, retrofit or sustainability programmes.
  • Experience preparing governance reports, funding submissions, or strategic sustainability plans.
