Job Description:
As one of two System Design Functions in Missile Architecture and Validation UK, System Design Missiles (SDM) is focused on providing Systems Engineering skills to Missile Systems programmes. As such we provide systems engineering skills to the project teams to establish requirements, system architectures and to guide the Verification & Validation process leading to product certification and acceptance by the Customer and their assurance agencies. As part of the system level assurance role we provide system level performance, security and safety assurance.

System Performance Engineers are required within one of our systems engineering teams. You will provide performance prediction and analysis expertise to major defence programmes, developing the latest Complex Weapons capabilities for the UK Armed Forces in response to advanced threats in all domains (Air, Land, Sea).

Responsibilities:

You will join a Systems design team on one of the missile programmes. Responsibilities vary depending on the lifecycle stage of any given programme, but will typically include:

  • Assessment of system performance using complex mathematical models (e.g. 6-Degree-of-Freedom (6-DoF) model):
    • Developing a good understanding of how the wider system affects performance and the knock-on impacts of changes to the design
    • For example, assessing the impact of algorithm, subsystem, or physical property changes on the safe release envelope or performance envelope of the system, against a defined set of requirements
  • Assessments at all phases of the lifecycle:
    • informing requirements at system and subsystem level
    • assessing against the requirements throughout concept, assessment and demonstration phases in support of product review gates
    • support to pre- and post- firing trial planning and analysis (supporting development and /or system verification)
    • production of final verification evidence (e.g. Performance Statement) for the customer at the completion of development
    • in-service-support and product evolution assessments
  • Generation of Missile / Weapon performance boundary data for hosting in launch platform / system (i.e. LAR / WEZ / Range Ring data) via large scale modelling studies and mass data processing

Skillset/experience required:

  • Use of mathematical models to assess behaviour of dynamic systems
  • Data analysis using Matlab and Simulink (or similar)
  • Capturing and presenting technical data in a clear and concise for expert and non-expert audiences
  • Exposure to the physical principles of aerodynamics, propulsion, guidance and control, and RF or IR seeker technology
  • Systems engineering experience in system performance and the functional chain domain
  • Systems engineering experience at multiple phases of the lifecycle such as requirements, system architecture, verification and certification.
  • Possession of excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and the capability to write clear, concise engineering documentation
  • Good verbal communication, listening and time management skills
  • Ability to engage with subject matter experts and grow your knowledge of new technical areas
