Audit Technical Assurance Across One of Europe's Largest Infrastructure Programmes

Are you an experienced auditor or engineering professional who understands how technical work should be checked, verified and evidenced?

Would you like to apply your audit skills across major infrastructure contracts, ensuring that contractors follow the correct technical assurance processes and can demonstrate that their engineering work meets the required standards?

High Speed Two Ltd is recruiting two Technical Assurance Auditors to join its specialist team, with one position based in London and one in Birmingham.

Working across HS2's 19 major delivery contracts, you will plan and conduct Technical Assurance Reviews of Tier 1 contractors, assess whether the correct processes are being followed and ensure findings are recorded, reported and resolved.

This is an opportunity to work across one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes, influencing how technical assurance is applied consistently across civils, stations and Rail Systems.

The Opportunity

HS2 operates a self assurance model, meaning contractors are responsible for assuring their own engineering work. Your role is to check that their assurance processes are appropriate, consistently applied and supported by the evidence needed to demonstrate compliance.

This is specifically a technical assurance auditing role, rather than a traditional Quality Assurance position. You will focus on whether the right technical checks are being carried out, whether requirements and standards are being applied correctly, and whether the evidence supports the conclusions reached.

You will manage the review process from planning and preparation through to reporting and closeout of corrective actions. You will also analyse findings and performance data to identify recurring issues, target future reviews according to risk and feed lessons back into HS2's technical processes.

The role offers broad exposure across multiple contracts and engineering disciplines, working with contractors, technical specialists and HS2 process owners.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and manage the Technical Assurance Review programme across allocated contracts and Integrated Project Teams.
  • Prepare review documentation, audit files and question sets, and coordinate reviews with contractors and HS2 attendees.
  • Chair Technical Assurance Reviews, record observations and Corrective Action Requests, and produce clear findings reports.
  • Track corrective actions through to closure and monitor contractor performance against technical assurance requirements.
  • Ensure review processes and question sets are applied consistently across different contracts and disciplines.
  • Analyse review results and performance data, identifying trends, recurring issues and areas requiring further attention.
  • Target review activity using a risk based approach, focusing effort where assurance concerns or delivery risks are greatest.
  • Provide feedback to technical process owners and support improvements to HS2 assurance procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with teams covering requirements, configuration and change management, risk, BIM and project management.
  • Communicate findings clearly, challenge poor practice constructively and help ensure corrective actions are implemented.

About You

We are open to experienced auditors as well as candidates looking to take the next step in their careers.

You might already work in Technical Assurance, audit or compliance, or you could be an engineer or project professional who has gained experience reviewing technical processes, checking compliance and evidencing engineering requirements.

We are particularly interested in people who understand how assurance works within major, multidisciplinary projects and can apply an objective, structured approach to reviewing how contractors operate.

You will be confident chairing reviews, engaging with technical teams, recording findings and following actions through to completion. Strong data analysis and reporting skills are important, as you will be responsible for reporting on review performance across your allocated contracts.

You do not necessarily need extensive experience as a Lead Auditor, but you should have a sound understanding of audit principles and be prepared to develop further within a specialist technical assurance environment.

Essential Experience

  • Experience in auditing, technical assurance, compliance or engineering verification within a complex project or operational environment.
  • Understanding of how technical requirements, standards and assurance processes are checked and evidenced.
  • Experience reviewing documentation, identifying gaps and recording findings or corrective actions.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to challenge processes constructively.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to plan reviews, manage actions and meet reporting deadlines.
  • Competence in analysing information and using data to identify trends and areas for improvement.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working on major rail, infrastructure or other complex engineering programmes.
  • Internal or Lead Auditor training, ideally with IRCA recognised certification aligned to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering, requirements management, configuration and change control, interface management or technical risk.
  • Experience working with contractors, designers and multidisciplinary delivery teams.
  • Understanding of technical assurance within a regulated or safety critical environment.
  • We are also interested in internal auditors who have completed, or are working towards, Lead Auditor training and want to develop into a more senior technical assurance role.
  • Open to Technical Assurance Managers who want to step into an Audit role

Why Join HS2?

This is an opportunity to develop specialist audit and assurance expertise across a major infrastructure programme, working with an experienced team and a wide range of engineering disciplines.

You will have a direct role in identifying assurance gaps, improving consistency across contractors and helping HS2 build confidence that the technical requirements for the railway are being met.

With approximately 10 years of programme work ahead and exposure across 19 contracts, the role offers a substantial platform for professional development.

There is a clear progression route to Senior Technical Assurance Auditor, with salaries of £75,000 to £83,500 + package.

For an auditor or engineering professional who enjoys investigating how processes work, challenging findings constructively and improving standards across complex projects, this is an opportunity to build a long term career in technical assurance with High Speed Two.
