Junior Technical Author Overview We're looking for a motivated Junior Technical Author to join a growing team working on highly secure communications projects within the UK defence and national security sector.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with some experience creating technical documentation who is looking to develop their career. You'll work alongside experienced engineers and technical authors to produce clear, accurate documentation that supports critical defence programmes.

This is an onsite role based in Cheltenham, offering the opportunity to work closely with highly experienced technical teams in a secure environment.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Producing and updating technical documentation for secure communications systems.

  • Working with engineers and project teams to understand technical information and present it in a clear and easy-to-follow format.

  • Creating user guides, installation instructions, operating procedures and maintenance documentation.

  • Ensuring documents are accurate, well-presented and comply with customer and security requirements.

  • Managing document revisions and version control.

  • Supporting the continuous improvement of documentation standards and templates.

  • Participating in technical reviews and learning from experienced members of the team.

What We're Looking For
  • Some experience writing or maintaining technical documentation within a technical, engineering, IT or defence environment.

  • Excellent written communication skills with strong attention to detail.

  • The ability to understand technical information and explain it clearly to different audiences.

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and a willingness to learn new documentation tools.

  • A proactive attitude and a desire to develop your career as a Technical Author.

  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.

Security Requirements Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be eligible to obtain the highest level of UK security clearance. To be considered, you will typically need to:

  • Be a sole British citizen (no dual nationality).

  • Have been born in the UK.

  • Have lived continuously in the UK for at least the last 10 years.

  • Be willing to undergo extensive background, financial and personal security checks.

Desirable
  • Experience within defence, government or another highly regulated industry.

  • A technical background in engineering, IT, networking or systems.

  • Exposure to document management or content management systems.

  • Awareness of MOD documentation standards such as JSPs or DEF STANs.
