Technical Sales Engineer – Rail
Seeking an experienced Technical Sales Engineer to join our growing team, supporting the development of our Rail Services business across the UK. This is a customer-facing role focused on business growth, technical sales, and tender support within the rolling stock sector.
The successful candidate will bring a strong engineering background within the rail industry, particularly around bogies, traction motors, HVAC systems, and rolling stock maintenance, combined with a proven ability to develop customer relationships and identify commercial opportunities.
Based from our Nottingham location with hybrid working available, this role offers an excellent opportunity to work with major rolling stock owners, operators, and maintenance providers while helping shape the future growth of the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive business development activities across the UK rail sector.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with Rolling Stock Companies (ROSCOs), Train Operating Companies (TOCs), Freight Operators, OEMs, and key industry stakeholders.
- Identify and secure new business opportunities within rolling stock overhaul, repair, maintenance, and engineering services.
- Provide technical support throughout the sales process, translating customer requirements into innovative engineering solutions.
- Lead and support the preparation of competitive technical and commercial tender submissions.
- Work closely with engineering and operational teams to develop tailored customer proposals.
- Monitor market activity, emerging fleet requirements, and industry trends to identify growth opportunities.
- Represent the business at customer meetings, industry events, exhibitions, and networking opportunities.
- Support contract negotiations and commercial discussions with key customers.
- Maintain a detailed understanding of rolling stock fleet challenges, maintenance programmes, and asset life extension opportunities.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure successful delivery of customer projects and commitments.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential
- Significant experience within the UK rail industry.
- Strong technical knowledge of rolling stock systems, particularly:
- Bogies
- Traction motors
- HVAC systems
- Rail vehicle maintenance and overhaul activities
- Experience within a technical sales, business development, engineering, or customer-facing commercial role.
- Proven track record of developing customer relationships and generating new business opportunities.
- Experience supporting or leading technical tender submissions and bid processes.
- Strong understanding of UK rail rolling stock fleets and maintenance strategies.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to engage effectively with customers at both technical and commercial levels.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership.
- Degree qualified in Mechanical, Electrical, Rail, or related Engineering discipline.
- Understanding of procurement processes within the rail sector.
- Existing network of contacts across the UK rolling stock market.
