Technical Sales & Projects Manager

Medical & Laboratory Gas Systems

Location: Canterbury, Kent, with UK-wide site travel
Reporting to: Directors

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Technical Sales & Projects Manager to join a specialist engineering business operating within the medical and laboratory gas sector.

This is a varied, hands-on position combining technical sales, estimating and project management. You will take ownership of projects from the initial customer enquiry and technical assessment through to quotation, installation, commissioning and final handover.

Working closely with customers, suppliers, subcontractors and site teams, you'll be responsible for developing technical solutions, securing new business and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and profitably.

This role would suit someone with experience in medical gas systems, specialist pipework or a related engineering environment, who enjoys combining commercial responsibility with hands-on project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Sales & Estimating

  • Review customer enquiries, technical specifications and engineering drawings.

  • Undertake site surveys to establish project requirements and develop appropriate technical solutions.

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates covering labour, materials, equipment and subcontractor costs.

  • Obtain, review and assess supplier and subcontractor quotations.

  • Produce professional customer quotations, clearly defining project scope, exclusions, assumptions and responsibilities.

  • Manage customer follow-ups, resolve technical and commercial queries and convert opportunities into confirmed orders.

Project Management & Delivery

  • Manage projects from initial order through to successful completion and handover.

  • Prepare project programmes, bills of materials and relevant project documentation.

  • Coordinate labour, materials, equipment and subcontractors to ensure projects are delivered efficiently.

  • Liaise with customers, site teams and other contractors regarding access, scheduling and project interfaces.

  • Prepare project-specific Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).

  • Provide appropriate site supervision and monitor project progress, workmanship and quality.

  • Identify and resolve operational issues, escalating matters where necessary.

  • Oversee testing and commissioning activities.

  • Coordinate completion records, operating and maintenance documentation and final customer handovers.

Technical Responsibilities

  • Apply a sound technical understanding of medical and laboratory gas systems throughout the sales and project delivery process.

  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical requirements.

  • Maintain a working knowledge of relevant industry standards and guidance, including:

    • BCGA publications.

    • HTM 02-01 Part A.

    • Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR).

    • Written Schemes of Examination (WSEs).

Commercial Management

  • Ensure projects are delivered within agreed commercial margins.

  • Monitor labour, materials and subcontractor costs against original estimates.

  • Identify additional works and scope changes, preparing variation quotations and securing customer approval wherever practicable before additional work proceeds.

  • Maintain accurate records of project instructions, variations, delays and other commercial matters.

  • Provide regular updates on project progress, forecast costs, margins and potential commercial risks.

  • Support timely and accurate invoicing through the provision of progress and completion information.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Take responsibility for day-to-day health and safety across projects under your control.

  • Ensure appropriate RAMS and site safety arrangements are in place before works commence.

  • Deliver or coordinate toolbox talks and site safety briefings.

  • Ensure personnel have the appropriate qualifications, training, competence and equipment.

  • Undertake and document site safety inspections, ensuring corrective actions are followed through.

  • Coordinate permits, isolations and other site-specific safety requirements.

  • Report incidents, near misses and unsafe working conditions, taking appropriate action and stopping work where necessary.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Previous experience in technical sales, estimating and/or project management within gas systems, specialist pipework or a related engineering sector.

  • Experience preparing detailed estimates, customer quotations, RAMS, bills of materials and project programmes.

  • Proven ability to coordinate site-based projects, labour and resources.

  • Good commercial awareness, including project costing, budgeting and margin management.

  • Full UK driving licence.

  • Strong communication, organisational and customer relationship management skills.

Desirable:

  • Relevant engineering or technical qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience.

  • CSCS Black Manager Card.

  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).

  • Medical Gas Authorised Person training or qualification.

  • Experience overseeing the testing, commissioning and handover of specialist gas systems.

The Ideal Candidate

You'll be commercially minded, technically capable and comfortable managing multiple responsibilities.

You'll enjoy the customer-facing element of technical sales but equally be confident taking ownership of projects once they've been secured. You'll be organised, proactive and able to balance technical requirements, customer expectations, health and safety and commercial performance.

Most importantly, you'll take pride in delivering quality projects, developing strong customer relationships and contributing to the continued success of a specialist engineering business.
