Hyreus is currently recruiting an experienced Temporary Works Engineer for an exciting opportunity based in Cumbria with a leading Tier One civil engineering contractor operating within the power and nuclear sectors.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the planning, coordination and technical management of temporary works across major civil engineering and infrastructure projects. Working closely with design teams, site management, engineers and subcontractors, you will help ensure temporary works are properly designed, checked, approved, implemented and monitored in accordance with project requirements and relevant industry standards.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically capable engineering professional to contribute to complex infrastructure projects within a highly regulated environment, helping maintain the highest standards of safety, quality and engineering assurance.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate temporary works activities throughout the planning, design, approval, implementation and removal stages.

  • Support the implementation and management of the Temporary Works Procedure in line with company policies and project requirements.

  • Maintain temporary works registers, schedules and associated technical documentation.

  • Coordinate with Temporary Works Coordinators, designers, checkers, site engineers and construction teams to ensure effective delivery.

  • Review temporary works proposals, calculations, drawings and design documentation to confirm they meet project requirements.

  • Ensure appropriate design briefs are prepared and issued, with clear information on loading, ground conditions, interfaces and construction sequences.

  • Monitor the progress of temporary works designs and approvals to ensure they align with construction programmes.

  • Verify that the correct design checks, approvals and permits are in place before temporary works are installed or used.

  • Support site teams in the safe implementation, inspection, maintenance and removal of temporary works.

  • Identify technical risks and design interfaces, ensuring potential issues are addressed before construction activities commence.

  • Assist with the management of changes to temporary works designs, ensuring revisions are assessed, approved and communicated appropriately.

  • Liaise with external designers, consultants and subcontractors to resolve technical queries and coordinate design deliverables.

  • Undertake site inspections and reviews to check that temporary works are installed in accordance with approved designs and specifications.

  • Ensure temporary works activities comply with relevant legislation, industry guidance, project procedures and health and safety requirements.

  • Maintain accurate records of design submissions, checks, permits, inspections and approvals for audit and assurance purposes.

  • Contribute to engineering reviews, risk assessments and lessons-learned activities to improve temporary works processes.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Proven experience as a Temporary Works Engineer or in a similar civil engineering or construction engineering role.

  • Strong understanding of temporary works design, coordination, checking and implementation within construction environments.

  • Experience working on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects, ideally for a Tier One contractor.

  • Previous exposure to power, nuclear, energy or other highly regulated infrastructure projects would be advantageous.

  • Good knowledge of relevant temporary works procedures and industry guidance, including BS 5975.

  • Understanding of structural engineering principles, construction methodologies, loading requirements and temporary stability.

  • Experience reviewing engineering drawings, calculations, design briefs and technical submissions.

  • Familiarity with temporary works registers, design risk assessments and approval processes.

  • Knowledge of relevant UK health and safety legislation and construction standards.

  • Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with designers, site teams and project stakeholders.

  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly when managing technical documentation and design approvals.

  • A proactive approach to identifying engineering risks and resolving technical challenges.

  • A relevant degree or qualification in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Relevant professional membership or working towards professional registration would be advantageous.
