Tooling Technician (CNC Machining) - Heavy Engineering

Friday: 6:45am - 2:15pm
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Tooling Technician to support the setup, preparation, and maintenance of cutting tools used in large-scale CNC milling operations. This role is critical to ensuring the efficient and accurate machining of complex components used across heavy engineering industries.
Working within a central tool store, you will be responsible for tooling management, tool assembly, measurement and presetting, and issuing tools to CNC machine operators.
You should be comfortable working around large machinery and handling heavy tooling. The position involves standing, bending, and lifting items up to 20kg, with exposure to noise, coolant, and metal swarf.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble, preset, and maintain cutting tools and tool holders for large CNC milling machines
- Measure and verify tooling dimensions using tool presetters, micrometres, calipers and other precision measuring equipment
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and setup instructions to prepare tooling for precision machining operations
- Manage tooling inventory, including stock control, regrinds, repairs, and replacement requirements.
- Support CNC machinists by minimising downtime during machine setups and changeovers.
- Troubleshoot and resolve tooling-related issues efficiently and effectively
- Rebuild and maintain large multi-insert tooling, face mills, boring heads, and specialist tool bodies.
- Maintain a safe, organised, and efficient tool room environment
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Previous experience in a tooling, tool-setting, CNC machining, or heavy engineering environment.
- Strong knowledge of machining tooling, including drilling, milling, and boring tools
- Ability to read and interpret technical engineering drawings
- Competent in the use of manual and digital precision measuring instruments
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality standards
Desirable
- Experience in Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Construction, or heavy fabrication industries.
- Experience supporting the machining of large, heavy components.
- Training or qualifications in CNC machining or mechanical engineering.
- Knowledge of heavy-duty CNC machining centres, including horizontal mills, vertical mills, and gantry machines.
- Familiarity with tooling systems such as Varilock.
