The role

Are you looking to build a career in mechanical engineering? We are recruiting a Trainee Mechanical Assembler on behalf of a high-tech engineering business based in the Cambridge area. This is a permanent role with full training provided and clear progression opportunities — ideal for someone hands-on, detail-oriented, and eager to develop precision engineering skills.

You will be working onsite in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, learning alongside experienced technicians and engineers. Please note: this role is moving to a double day shift pattern. The early week will be worked Monday to Friday and the late week Monday to Thursday only. Please take this into consideration when applying.

Main responsibilities

  • Learn to interpret and follow engineering drawings accurately
  • Measure, cut, and prepare components to tight tolerances (within 0.5mm)
  • Use measuring tools including calipers, micrometers, and gauges
  • Assemble components using hand tools and precision techniques
  • Support welding and testing processes (full training provided)
  • Carry out quality checks and assist with pressure testing
  • Work closely with supervisors and team leaders to meet production targets
  • Maintain clean, safe working areas and follow all health and safety procedures

Skills/experience

  • Excellent attention to detail and strong hand-eye coordination
  • Good manual dexterity for working with small or precision components
  • An interest in mechanical engineering or manufacturing
  • Ability to work accurately within tight tolerances
  • Comfortable following clear instructions and structured processes
  • Basic experience with hand tools or measuring equipment (desirable but not essential)
  • Positive attitude and genuine willingness to learn
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and timekeeping skills
  • Flexible approach, with the ability to support overtime when required

Working hours

  • Current hours: daytime (Monday to Friday)
  • Potential shift to double days pattern within three to six months
