An established and growing manufacturer and distributor within the building products sector is seeking an experienced Transport Manager to lead its transport and distribution operation.

This is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and compliant delivery of products to customers across regional and national locations. You'll oversee transport planning, fleet compliance, driver management and operational performance, while working closely with warehouse, production and customer service teams to maintain exceptional service levels.

The successful candidate will combine strong transport management expertise with a proactive, hands-on leadership style and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Transport Operations
  • Lead the day-to-day transport operation, ensuring deliveries are completed safely, efficiently and on time.
  • Manage transport planning, route optimisation and vehicle utilisation to maximise operational performance.
  • Coordinate daily delivery schedules in collaboration with production and warehouse teams.
  • Monitor transport KPIs, service levels and delivery performance, implementing improvements where required.
  • Ensure effective communication between transport, warehouse, production and customer service departments.
Fleet Management
  • Oversee the maintenance, servicing and legal compliance of the vehicle fleet.
  • Ensure all vehicles remain roadworthy and meet Operator Licence requirements.
  • Manage vehicle inspections, servicing schedules, MOTs and defect reporting.
  • Work closely with external maintenance providers and suppliers to minimise vehicle downtime.
Compliance & Health & Safety
  • Ensure full compliance with DVSA regulations, Operator Licence obligations, drivers' hours legislation and the Working Time Directive.
  • Monitor tachograph compliance and maintain accurate transport documentation.
  • Promote a strong culture of health, safety and legal compliance throughout the transport operation.
  • Support audits and ensure transport procedures remain compliant with current legislation and company standards.
Team Leadership
  • Lead, motivate and develop a team of drivers and transport personnel.
  • Conduct regular performance reviews, coaching and training.
  • Manage recruitment, absence management and employee development where appropriate.
  • Foster a positive, accountable and customer-focused working environment.
Customer Service & Operational Performance
  • Ensure consistently high levels of customer service through effective transport planning and communication.
  • Investigate delivery issues and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal departments, customers and external transport partners.
  • Produce regular management reports covering fleet performance, compliance, delivery KPIs and operational costs.
Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve transport efficiency, reduce operating costs and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Review transport processes and implement improvements to increase productivity and service performance.
  • Support the introduction of new systems, technology and best practices across the transport function.
About You

You'll be an experienced Transport Manager with a strong operational background, excellent leadership skills and a thorough understanding of UK transport legislation.

Essential Experience
  • Previous experience managing a transport operation within manufacturing, distribution or logistics.
  • CPC Transport Manager Qualification 
  • Strong knowledge of Operator Licence compliance, DVSA regulations, drivers' hours and tachograph legislation.
  • Experience managing drivers, fleet compliance and transport planning.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to improve transport efficiency and operational performance.
  • Strong commercial awareness with experience managing transport costs and service levels.
Desirable
  • Experience within manufacturing, construction products or building materials.
  • Knowledge of Transport Management Systems (TMS).
  • IOSH or other Health & Safety qualification.
  • Experience leading operational improvement initiatives.
