Main Purpose
Deliver high‑quality teaching, learning and assessment to students aged 16–19, ensuring they develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed for progression into further study, apprenticeships or employment.
As Tutor, you will be responsible for teaching Functional Skills Maths/English and Pre-Vocational Qualifications to students aged 16-19 including students who speak English as a second language.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver consistently high-quality, inclusive and trauma-informed teaching and support aligned with internal and external professional FE teaching standards.
- Plan and deliver a coherent curriculum that enables students to achieve qualifications and develop their personal, social and employability skills.
- Be responsible for student outcomes by ensuring all students have clear, ambitious goals and receive the support required to achieve and progress.
- Ensure all students’ needs are met and that they are supported appropriately to achieve well, including those with identified additional support needs.
- Use data, evidence, and student voice to continuously evaluate and improve teaching, learning and support strategies.
- Create a safe, inclusive and purposeful learning environment, proactively promoting high standards of behaviour, attendance, engagement and progress.
- Proactively contribute to developing and delivering the wider student experience, including induction, assessment, enrichment, careers and progression activities.
- Maintain accurate, timely and high-quality records, demonstrating professional accountability and compliance with organisational and funding requirements.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners to support students holistically, contribute to continuous improvement and respond flexibly to service needs, including participation in professional meetings (e.g. PEPs).
- Take responsibility for safeguarding, promoting the welfare of students, and acting on concerns in line with organisational policy.
- Contribute to quality assurance, curriculum development and innovation to ensure provision remains relevant, effective and continuously improving.
- Demonstrate professional accountability by meeting performance expectations and contributing to team targets.
- Take ownership of continuous professional development, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of FE practice, subject expertise and regulatory requirements.
- Adhere to all applicable internal and external regulations, guidance, policies and procedures.
Person Specification
Essential
- Strong classroom and behaviour management skills
- Ability to plan and deliver engaging teaching for learners with diverse needs
- Excellent communication, teamwork and relationship-building skills with students, families and professionals
- Strong organisational skills and ability to maintain accurate, timely records
- Experience of teaching English and/or maths and/or ESOL to 16–19 learners
- Experience of supporting students with SEND, additional learning needs or disadvantage
- Experience of assessing learner needs and implementing effective support strategies
- Level 2 English and maths (or equivalent)
- Teaching qualification or willingness to work towards one
- Relevant subject qualification in English, maths, ESOL, education, SEND or a related field
Desirable
- Experience in a further education or alternative provision setting
- Experience of working collaboratively with external agencies, parents/carers and multi-disciplinary teams
- Assessor, IQA or exam access arrangements qualification
- Safeguarding or trauma-informed practice training beyond mandatory requirements
