Duties and Responsibilities

Main Duties

Carry out fabrication and welding work to support plant maintenance and engineering activities.

Manufacture components and assemblies from engineering drawings, sketches and verbal instructions.

Modify existing plant and equipment to improve safety, reliability and operational performance.

Design and fabricate bespoke solutions to meet business and operational requirements.

Support continuous improvement and cost-saving initiatives across the engineering department.

Work collaboratively with Production, Engineering and Technology teams to develop and implement plant improvements.

Assist with planned maintenance activities and major plant shutdowns.

Respond to equipment breakdowns requiring fabrication or welding repairs, including work on larger items of plant.

Repair or manufacture guards, platforms, handrails, brackets, chutes, hoppers, pipework and structural steelwork.

Carry out cutting, drilling, grinding, marking out and fitting operations using appropriate workshop equipment.

Read and interpret engineering drawings and produce simple fabrication sketches where required.

Ensure all work is completed to a high standard of quality and workmanship.

Follow company Health, Safety and Environmental procedures, including permit-to-work and isolation procedures.

Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.

Work flexibly to support operational and business requirements.

Responsibilities / Accountability / KPI’s

Safety: Complete all fabrication, welding and maintenance activities in accordance with HSE procedures, permit-to-work and isolation requirements, with zero avoidable safety incidents or breaches.

Quality: Deliver fabrication, welding and repair work to agreed engineering standards, specifications and drawings, with minimal rework or defects.

Reliability: Complete planned maintenance and breakdown repairs effectively to minimise equipment downtime and support plant availability and reliability targets.

Delivery: Complete assigned maintenance, fabrication and improvement activities within agreed timescales and priorities.

Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement practical improvements that increase plant reliability, improve safety, reduce downtime and deliver measurable cost savings.

Productivity: Respond effectively to breakdowns and operational requirements, prioritising work according to plant criticality and business needs.

Cost Control: Minimise material waste, rework and unnecessary maintenance costs through efficient fabrication and repair methods.

Teamwork: Work effectively with Engineering, Production and Technology teams to achieve maintenance, reliability and operational performance objectives.

Housekeeping: Maintain high standards of workshop and work-area organisation, cleanliness and equipment condition.

Health & Safety

In line with Section 8 of the Act, employees must not intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare.

All employees are expected to report any incidents, near misses, hazards, or unsafe practices promptly and accurately, and to complete all required health and safety training relevant to their role. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn and maintained in accordance with company policy. Employees must follow all site rules, signage, and instructions, and demonstrate a proactive attitude toward risk reduction and safe working practices.

Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge

NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Fabrication and Welding.

City & Guilds Welding qualifications.

Coded welding certification.

Abrasive Wheels certification.

Working at Height training.

Confined Space training.

MEWP experience.

Forklift Truck experience.

Overhead Crane experience.

Experience within the steel or other heavy process industries.

Skills

Proven experience as a Welder/Fabricator within a heavy industrial or manufacturing environment.

Competent in MIG and MMA (Stick) welding.

Experience in fabrication from engineering drawings.

Ability to measure, mark out and manufacture fabricated components accurately.

Experience repairing and modifying industrial plant and equipment.

Competent in oxy-acetylene cutting and general workshop practices.

Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a multi-skilled maintenance team.

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify practical engineering solutions.

Good communication skills and the ability to work closely with multiple departments.

Strong commitment to Health & Safety and safe systems of work.

Working hours

42 hours Days Only: Mon - Thurs 8am - 4.30pm, Fri 8am - 4pm
