How to get a warehouse job in the UK with no experience

Warehouse work is one of the most accessible jobs in the UK. Most roles ask for no qualifications and no prior experience — employers train you on site — which is why it is a common first step for people changing careers or starting out.

What the job involves

Day to day you will be picking orders, packing, checking goods in and out, and keeping the warehouse tidy and safe. It is active, on-your-feet work, often to a target or pick rate. Most large sites run shifts — days, nights, or a four-on-four-off pattern — and night and weekend hours usually pay a premium.

How to get in

The fastest route is through a recruitment agency. Most warehouse roles are filled by agencies on a temporary or temp-to-perm basis, especially around the autumn peak when retailers staff up for Christmas. Register with two or three local agencies, be flexible on shifts, and a placement usually follows quickly. You can also apply directly to the distribution centres run by big retailers and logistics firms.

How to earn more

The single biggest lever is a forklift licence. A counterbalance, reach truck or PPT ticket (RTITB, ITSSAR or AITT accredited) moves you from general operative pay into a higher band, and many employers will fund the training once you are on the team. Reliability matters too — turning up, hitting targets and converting a temp contract to permanent is how most people lift their pay and security.

The automation question

Warehousing is one of the few hands-on sectors where automation is genuinely visible — the largest operators are adding picking robots and automated conveyors. For now, current adverts barely mention it and demand for operatives stays high, but it is worth watching over the longer term. A forklift or supervisory qualification is a sensible hedge.
