Assistant Quantity Surveyor – Groundworks and Surfacing
Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join our commercial team, working on civil engineering projects with a focus on groundworks, surfacing, and infrastructure. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop your commercial and contractual knowledge while supporting the successful delivery of projects.
Working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and Contracts Managers, you will assist with the commercial management of projects from pre-contract through to final account, gaining valuable experience in cost control, procurement, subcontract management, and client liaison.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the preparation and submission of valuations and applications for payment
- Support the monitoring and control of project costs against budgets
- Assist with the assessment and processing of subcontractor applications and payments
- Attend site visits to measure completed works and monitor project progress
- Help prepare and record variations and change control documentation
- Support procurement activities, including obtaining quotations and preparing subcontract packages
- Assist in the preparation of monthly Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs)
- Maintain accurate commercial records and project documentation
- Support the preparation of commercial reports and forecasts for senior management
- Assist in ensuring compliance with contractual obligations (NEC, JCT, etc.)
- Work closely with operational teams to support the successful commercial delivery of projects
- Develop an understanding of commercial processes and industry best practice
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Degree-qualified or currently studying towards a degree/HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related discipline
- Previous experience in a construction, civil engineering, or commercial support role (placement year experience considered)
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Eagerness to learn and develop within a commercial environment
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites
Desirable Criteria
- Experience within groundworks, surfacing, highways, or infrastructure projects
- Understanding of standard forms of contract (NEC, JCT)
- Knowledge of cost reporting and commercial processes
- Experience using commercial or estimating software (e.g. Causeway, Candy, COINS)
- Working towards professional membership with Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or similar professional body
- Awareness of health and safety regulations within the construction industry
