Goodman Masson are currently working with a social housing organisation in Surrey to recruit for an interim Surveyor.

Pay Rate: £350 - £450 a day Umbrella   

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Building Surveyor to join a busy local authority property team. Working within a close-knit team and reporting directly to the Building Services & Facilities Manager, you'll play a key role in delivering a varied portfolio of building projects, compliance activities and planned maintenance across the council's operational and residential estate.

This is an excellent opportunity for a surveyor who enjoys variety. No two days are the same, with responsibilities ranging from fire safety and compliance, planned capital works and contract management through to condition surveys, repairs, complaints and project delivery.

The Role

You'll provide professional surveying expertise across a diverse portfolio of council-owned buildings, ensuring assets are safe, compliant and well maintained. Working closely with internal stakeholders and external contractors, you'll oversee projects from inception through to completion while ensuring quality, compliance and value for money.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering building surveying services across the council's operational and residential property portfolio.
  • Managing a range of planned maintenance and capital works projects, including roof replacement programmes and refurbishment schemes.
  • Supporting the delivery of a civil engineering project involving riverbank sheet piling, ensuring works are delivered safely and in accordance with contract requirements.
  • Undertaking property inspections, condition surveys and defect diagnosis.
  • Investigating building defects including damp and moisture ingress, providing recommendations and overseeing remedial works.
  • Assessing properties for potential refurbishment into temporary accommodation, supporting the development of business cases through to project completion.
  • Managing contractors, consultants and suppliers to ensure projects are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to the required quality standards.
  • Producing technical specifications using NBS Chorus and preparing contract documentation using JCT and NEC forms of contract.
  • Monitoring contractor performance, undertaking site inspections and ensuring compliance with statutory obligations.
  • Supporting fire safety compliance across the council's property portfolio.
  • Assisting with mechanical and electrical compliance programmes and supporting the management of specialist service contracts.
  • Responding to day-to-day repairs, technical queries, complaints and Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
  • Maintaining accurate project records, compliance documentation and reporting information.

About You

We're looking for an experienced Building Surveyor who can quickly integrate into the team and confidently manage a varied workload with minimal supervision.

You'll ideally have experience of working within local government, social housing or a similarly complex property environment and be comfortable balancing project delivery with operational surveying responsibilities.

Essential requirements include:

  • Proven experience as a Building Surveyor delivering repairs, maintenance, compliance and capital projects.
  • A recognised fire safety qualification such as:
    • NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety
    • IFE Level 3, 4 or 5 Certificate
    • FPA Diploma in Fire Risk Assessments
  • Experience producing specifications using NBS Chorus.
  • Good knowledge of JCT and NEC contracts.
  • Strong contract administration and contractor management experience.
  • Knowledge of statutory compliance and building safety legislation.
  • Experience investigating building defects, including damp and moisture-related issues.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable experience includes:

  • Civil engineering project experience, particularly riverbank, retaining wall or sheet piling schemes.
  • Experience working across both commercial/public buildings and residential housing stock.
  • Knowledge of M&E compliance programmes and facilities management.
