Senior Civil Project Engineer 2-Year Contract

Location: Stanlow, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire | Hybrid
Contract: Approximately 2 years | Contract Assignment I Outside of IR35


We are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Civil Project Engineer to support the preparation and execution of a major Turnaround at Stanlow Oil Refinery in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.


The Role

You will play a key role in taking civil and structural scopes from initial concept through to detailed design, estimating, procurement, workpack development and execution.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing civil/structural engineering input across major turnaround and maintenance projects.
  • Developing scopes of work, specifications, repair methodologies and construction workpacks.
  • Reviewing contractor drawings, calculations, method statements, temporary works proposals and specialist submissions.
  • Supporting constructability reviews, access arrangements, lifting strategies and temporary works.
  • Providing engineering input into major repair, replacement and re-life projects involving process plant, vessels, boilers and associated structures.
  • Supporting refractory and lining repair schemes, including technical assurance and installation requirements.
  • Identifying civil/structural risks and ensuring these are reflected in project estimates, schedules, procurement strategies and readiness reviews.
  • Providing support for heavy lift planning, structural steelwork removal/reinstatement and temporary stability requirements.
  • Working closely with contractors and specialist suppliers to resolve technical and site-based issues.
  • Providing field engineering support during enabling works and the 2028 Turnaround execution period.
  • Supporting MOC, ORA, HAZOP, ALARP and design review processes where appropriate.
  • Maintaining a strong site presence and promoting safe, practical and constructable engineering solutions.

The role will require someone who can operate comfortably between engineering, project delivery and the site environment, translating technical requirements into practical solutions that can be safely executed within demanding turnaround schedules.

About You

We are looking for a technically strong and delivery-focused Civil or Structural Engineer who is comfortable working in complex, live industrial environments.

Ideally, you will have:

  • 710+ years' civil/structural engineering experience within refining, petrochemical, process plant, or other high-hazard environments.
  • Proven experience supporting projects, shutdowns, turnarounds or major maintenance programmes.
  • Strong knowledge of steelwork, reinforced concrete, foundations, platforms, access structures and temporary works.
  • Experience with brownfield modifications and working around existing/live plant.
  • Experience supporting heavy lifts, structural steelwork removal/reinstatement and access modifications.
  • Experience reviewing contractor designs, calculations, method statements, risk assessments and quality documentation.
  • A strong understanding of constructability, SIMOPS, confined spaces, access restrictions and outage-critical environments.
  • A practical understanding of refractory inspection, repair and installation would be highly advantageous.
  • API 936 certification would be highly desirable, A degree or equivalent qualification in Civil, Structural or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or active progression towards professional registration, would be advantageous.
  • A full UK driving licence.
