Cover Supervisor
Teach Now
Location: Hertfordshire
Salary: £95–£130 per day
Contract: Full-time, long-term temporary
Start Date: 8 September 2026
Key Stages: KS3, KS4 and KS5
Teach Now is seeking a capable, organised and confident Cover Supervisor for a long-term secondary-school opportunity in Hertfordshire.
This is a fantastic role for someone who enjoys working with young people and is comfortable taking responsibility for a classroom, but who is not necessarily looking for a qualified-teacher position.
You will supervise lessons when the usual teacher is absent, ensuring that students complete the work provided and that classrooms remain calm, productive and purposeful.
For aspiring teachers, this is also an excellent opportunity to build substantial classroom-management experience before progressing to teacher training.
You will:
- Supervise classes across KS3, KS4 and potentially KS5
- Deliver pre-prepared lesson materials and explain instructions clearly
- Ensure students remain focused and complete the work set
- Manage classroom behaviour in line with school policy
- Respond appropriately to minor classroom issues
- Provide additional clarification where students require support
- Register attendance and follow school procedures
- Work closely with teaching assistants and department staff
- Report any safeguarding or behaviour concerns promptly
- Provide teachers with useful feedback following lessons
You will not normally be expected to plan lessons or undertake the full responsibilities of a qualified classroom teacher.
- Experience working with secondary-aged pupils
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Confidence addressing a full classroom
- Effective behaviour-management skills
- Good literacy and numeracy
- The ability to follow lesson plans and school policies
- Professionalism, resilience and reliability
- The right to work in the UK
- An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one
- Suitable professional references
A degree is desirable, particularly for applicants considering teacher training, although substantial relevant school experience may also be considered.
Experience in education, tutoring, youth work, coaching, mentoring or another role involving groups of teenagers would be valuable.
- Regular, full-time secondary-school experience
- Exposure to a range of subjects and age groups
- Support from experienced teachers and pastoral staff
- The chance to develop excellent classroom-management skills
- Valuable experience for future PGCE, SCITT or teacher-training applications
- A role that provides classroom responsibility without routine lesson planning
