Deputy Manager - Children’s Residential Home

St Albans, Hertfordshire | Up to £40,000 | Full-time

Are you an experienced Senior Residential Support Worker or Deputy Manager ready for your next move within children’s residential care?

I am recruiting for a Deputy Manager in St Albans to join an established children’s residential home providing therapeutic, child-centred care to young people who need consistency, stability and adults they can genuinely rely on.

This is an important role within the home. You will work closely with the Registered Manager, helping to lead the staff team, maintain high standards of care and safeguarding, and ensure the home runs effectively day to day.

We are particularly interested in finding somebody who combines strong childcare experience with excellent organisation and administration skills. This is not simply about being good on shift. You need to be comfortable with the paperwork, recording and compliance that sit behind a well-run children’s home.

The role will include supporting and supervising staff, overseeing shifts and rotas, contributing to care plans and reviews, maintaining accurate records, supporting safeguarding practice, completing risk assessments, monitoring incidents and ensuring administrative and financial procedures are followed correctly. The original role profile also places considerable emphasis on mentoring staff, maintaining care documentation and supporting the Registered Manager in the day-to-day management of the home.

What we are looking for

You will need:

  • Experience working within a children’s residential home / residential childcare environment
  • Previous experience supervising or leading staff, ideally as a Deputy Manager, Team Leader or Senior Residential Support Worker
  • A relevant Level 3 qualification in Children and Young People / Residential Childcare
  • Strong safeguarding knowledge and an understanding of working with vulnerable young people
  • Excellent written communication, record keeping and administration skills
  • Confidence completing care documentation, reports, risk assessments and other compliance paperwork
  • The ability to organise staff, manage priorities and support the smooth running of a busy home
  • A genuine commitment to achieving positive outcomes for children and young people
  • A full driving licence is essential

The full person specification also identifies leadership, staff supervision, written and verbal communication, rota and budget management, risk assessment and computer literacy as important skills for the position.

Why consider this role?

You will be joining a provider with an established therapeutic approach to residential childcare and a strong focus on training and professional development. The emphasis is very much on understanding each young person as an individual and helping them build the relationships, confidence and life skills they need for their future.
