We are creating an opportunity for a Deputy Production Manager to support the Managing Director with the day-to-day co-ordination of Production.  

The role will organise customer orders, set production priorities, resolve technical and quality issues, support employees and improve manufacturing performance. As the successful candidate develops, they will take on greater responsibility for customer communication, operational decision-making and the development of key customer accounts.  

This is a development opportunity for someone with a strong understanding of CNC machining who is proactive, organised and interested in progressing into a broader production management role. Structured training and support will be provided.

Role Details

Title:  Deputy Production Manager

Reports To:  Managing Director

Department:  Production

Hours:  Between 7am to 5pm Mon to Thur; 7am to 1pm Friday*

Working Pattern:  Days 

Pension:  Auto-Enrolment Pension Scheme

Sick Pay:  Enhanced Sick Pay after 1 Year Service

Salary:  £44,000 to £50,000 depending on experience

Start Date:  As soon as reasonably possible

Note:  *Hours to be agreed depending on cover required for shopfloor overtime

Role Purpose

To support the Managing Director in leading the day-to-day production operation, ensuring customer orders are delivered on time, in full and to specification. The role will co-ordinate production priorities, remove operational constraints, support employees and drive improvements in safety, quality, delivery and productivity. As the role develops, the postholder will take increasing responsibility for customer relationships and operational management.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review and process customer orders, including live orders, stock orders and rework requirements.
  • Set weekly production priorities and communicate them clearly to the relevant departments.
  • Monitor progress against the production schedule and take action when delivery dates are at risk.
  • Co-ordinate the resolution of production constraints involving machines, materials, tooling, inspection and subcontract processes.
  • Support the investigation and resolution of production and quality issues.
  • Communicate with customers regarding order progress, technical queries and delivery requirements.
  • Co-ordinate suppliers, subcontract processes, deliveries and collections where required.
  • Organise planned preventative maintenance and repairs for CNC machines, production equipment and site plant.
  • Support employees with day-to-day issues, training and development requirements.
  • Co-ordinate overtime and production cover according to workload.
  • Support recruitment, induction and onboarding activities.
  • Ensure appropriate health and safety practices are established, communicated and followed.
  • Lead or support continuous improvement activities that improve safety, quality, delivery, productivity or cost.
  • Act as a site keyholder and carry out agreed opening / closing schedules

Experience and Skills Required

Essential

  • Strong technical understanding of CNC machining and associated manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to understand production requirements, engineering drawings and quality expectations.
  • Good understanding of CNC production processes, systems and customer requirements.
  • Ability to organise work, prioritise competing requirements and plan ahead.
  • Confidence communicating with employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Ability to remain calm and make practical decisions when problems arise.
  • Good computer literacy and willingness to learn production, quality and business systems.
  • Evidence of taking ownership and following actions through to completion.
