Electrician’s Mate / Electrical Improver in Birkenhead

We are currently looking for an Electrician’s Mate / Electrical Improver for temporary work at a busy ship repair yard in Birkenhead.

You will be assisting with the installation, maintenance, relocation and removal of temporary electrical equipment on board vessels and throughout the shipyard.

The work will mainly involve temporary lighting and power supplies, supporting the various trades carrying out ship repair work.

This is a hands-on, physically demanding role, with much of the work taking place inside vessel hulls, tanks and other enclosed spaces.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Assist with installing, maintaining, moving and removing temporary lighting and power distribution systems.

• Support electricians with three-phase power and single-phase 110V installations.

• Assist with connecting, checking and inspecting temporary electrical equipment.

• Run, route and secure cables safely around vessels and the shipyard.

• Help identify and report electrical faults, damaged equipment and potential hazards.

• Work safely in confined, dark and awkward spaces.

• Follow all permit-to-work, isolation and site safety procedures.

• Maintain clean and tidy working areas.

Working Environment

This is a busy ship repair environment, with work taking place inside vessel hulls, tanks and other enclosed spaces.

Conditions can be dark, cramped, damp and noisy. Candidates must be comfortable working in confined spaces, at height and outdoors in varying weather conditions.

The role is physically demanding and will involve climbing ladders, working in restricted areas and regularly handling cables and electrical equipment.

Essential Requirements

• Some previous experience working alongside an electrician or on temporary electrical installations.

• Basic understanding of electrical safety.

• Willingness to learn, follow instructions and work under the supervision of qualified electricians.

• A reliable and hardworking attitude.

• Good attendance and timekeeping.

• Comfortable working in a physically demanding industrial environment.

Pay Rates – PAYE Only

• Basic Rate: £17.58 per hour

• Overtime 1: £26.37 per hour

• Overtime 2: £35.16 per hour
