Embedded Software Engineer

Write the embedded C behind smart metering devices shipping over a million units, with a genuine path towards leading the firmware team.

This is an Embedded Software Engineer role with an established manufacturer, developing firmware for high-volume metering products.

As an Embedded Software Engineer you will design, develop and test the embedded firmware at the heart of an established manufacturer's smart metering products. Working entirely in embedded C on Microchip tools, you will take on new product development, significant redesign work and modular improvements across a product range that ships well over a million units and sees new products every 12 to 18 months. With metering specifications, device language and increasingly cyber security directives all in scope, it is technically meaty work with real ownership. There is also a genuine opportunity here: this role offers a real path towards leading the firmware function in the future as part of a succession plan.

Job Responsibilities
  • Designing, developing and testing embedded firmware in embedded C for metering products
  • Carrying out new product development, redesign work and modular improvements across the range
  • Developing firmware to relevant metering specifications and device language standards
  • Building cyber security into firmware in line with new directives and requirements
  • Writing your own test code and building testing into the development process
  • Working within the Microchip toolchain and emulation environment
  • Debugging and validating firmware against hardware
  • Producing clear technical documentation
  • Contributing to design reviews and continuous improvement

Skills and Experience
To succeed as an Embedded Software Engineer you will need:
  • Strong, proven experience developing firmware in embedded C
  • A solid maths background
  • Experience taking products through new development and redesign
  • The ability to write test code and build testing into the development process
  • Experience with the Microchip toolchain and emulation environments, which is an advantage
  • An awareness of metering specifications or device language standards, which is desirable
  • An understanding of embedded cyber security requirements, which is desirable
  • Some scripting experience, which is useful
  • A degree in electronics, software or a related discipline, or equivalent experience

Pay and Benefits
As an Embedded Software Engineer you will receive:
  • Salary up to £60,000, dependent on experience
  • Monday to Friday working hours
  • International travel opportunities
  • A clear path towards leading the firmware function
  • Varied, hands-on work on high-volume products with regular new development
