Field Engineer – Advanced Sensing Technology
£45,000 – £55,000 + Benefits
Paignton or Bristol | Hybrid - UK Travel + Occasional International Travel
Mploy Group is working with an innovative, fast-growing technology business developing advanced sensing and monitoring systems for industrial applications.
As the company moves through an exciting phase of product development and commercial growth, they are looking for a Field Engineer to join their technical team.
This is a genuinely hands-on engineering position, working across R&D, product engineering, software, data and customer operations. You’ll take advanced hardware/software systems out of the development environment and into real-world industrial sites – installing them, commissioning them, running trials, gathering data and helping improve the technology based on what happens in the field.
It could suit someone from a Field Engineering, Test Engineering, Applications Engineering or experimental R&D background who enjoys getting hands-on with complex technology rather than being permanently desk or laboratory based.
What you’ll be doing
- Plan and deliver field trials at customer and third-party test sites
- Carry out site surveys and prepare equipment for deployment
- Install, configure, align, calibrate and commission complex sensing systems
- Work with optical, electrical, mechanical, computing and communications equipment
- Capture and quality-check technical and environmental data
- Design and execute structured validation and performance trials
- Investigate system performance, repeatability and measurement accuracy
- Diagnose hardware, software, optical, electrical and network-related faults
- Provide first-line technical support and troubleshooting in the field
- Work closely with R&D and Product teams to identify improvements
- Turn field observations into structured engineering feedback and requirements
- Support the validation of new hardware and software capabilities
- Work directly with customers, engineering partners and technical organisations
- Produce clear field reports, test documentation and technical summaries
- Help develop more repeatable and scalable deployment processes
The role covers the full process from test planning and site readiness through installation, commissioning, data acquisition, validation, fault-finding and reporting.
What we’re looking for
- Degree, HND or equivalent practical experience within Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Instrumentation or a related technical discipline
- Around 3+ years' experience within Field Engineering, Test Engineering, Applications Engineering or experimental R&D
- Strong practical engineering and fault-finding skills
- Experience installing, commissioning, calibrating or validating complex equipment
- Comfortable working across a mixture of hardware and software
- Experience conducting technical tests, experiments or validation trials
- Ability to work with and interpret technical data
- Exposure to Excel plus Python, MATLAB or another analysis environment would be useful
- Confident working directly with customers and technical stakeholders
- Understanding of risk assessments, method statements and industrial site safety
- Full UK driving licence
- Happy with frequent UK travel, overnight stays and occasional international travel
Experience with lidar, lasers, photonics, optical systems, gas detection, spectroscopy, environmental monitoring or other precision sensing technologies would be particularly interesting, although it isn't essential.
Why apply?
This is a chance to work with genuinely cutting-edge technology where your engineering work in the field directly influences how the product develops.
Rather than simply installing finished equipment, you'll be working with technology that is continuing to evolve – testing it in real environments, understanding how it performs, solving problems and feeding that knowledge directly back into the engineering teams.
