We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Graduate Building Surveyor to join our growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate to develop their career within a supportive and collaborative environment, working primarily across the education sector.

The successful candidate will assist in delivering a wide range of professional building surveying services for schools, academies, colleges, and other educational establishments. Working alongside experienced surveyors, the Graduate Building Surveyor will gain practical experience in project delivery, condition surveys, contract administration, planned maintenance, statutory compliance, and professional building surveying services. The role offers structured professional development and full support towards achieving Chartered Building Surveyor (MRICS) status.

Key Responsibilities

The Graduate Building Surveyor will undertake condition surveys and building inspections across educational facilities and assist in preparing survey reports, schedules of condition, technical specifications, and other professional documentation. The role will involve supporting the delivery of refurbishment, maintenance, and improvement projects from inception through to completion, including assisting with contract administration, carrying out site inspections, monitoring project progress, and reporting on quality and compliance.

The successful candidate will assist in preparing cost estimates, tender documentation, and procurement information while maintaining accurate project records throughout each commission. Regular liaison with clients, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders will form an important part of the role, ensuring projects are delivered efficiently and to a high professional standard. The Graduate Building Surveyor will also ensure compliance with current building regulations, health and safety legislation, and statutory requirements while attending client meetings and site visits as required. Continuous professional development will be actively encouraged, with the expectation that the successful candidate will work towards completion of the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).

Applicants should hold a degree in Building Surveying, preferably accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), and possess a full UK driving licence with the ability to travel to client sites.

Candidates should demonstrate a sound understanding of building construction and building pathology together with strong written and verbal communication skills. Good organisational and time management skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Competence in Microsoft Office applications and a professional, client-focused approach are expected, together with a willingness to learn and develop professionally.

Previous placement or internship experience within a surveying or construction environment would be advantageous, as would knowledge of JCT contracts, familiarity with AutoCAD or similar surveying software, and an understanding of the education sector and public sector procurement. Membership of, or a clear intention to join, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is desirable.

The role involves a combination of office-based work, site inspections, and client meetings. A significant proportion of work will be undertaken within occupied schools, colleges, and other educational establishments. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times while working in these environments, demonstrating discretion, integrity, and a clear understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.

As the role involves regular work within schools and other educational establishments, safeguarding is of paramount importance. The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before commencing employment. Employment will be conditional upon satisfactory DBS clearance and any additional pre-employment checks required by clients.

The successful candidate must comply with all safeguarding, child protection, and site security procedures and complete any mandatory safeguarding training required. Professional conduct, confidentiality, and an understanding of responsibilities when working within educational settings are essential requirements of the role.
