Grounds Maintenance Operative / Gardener

Contract: Temporary / Ongoing
Working Environment: Parks, open spaces, highways and public areas

Role Overview

We are looking for reliable and hardworking Grounds Maintenance Operatives / Gardeners to support the maintenance of parks, open spaces and public areas across the London Borough of Hounslow.

This is a hands-on outdoor position involving general gardening, grass cutting and grounds maintenance. You will work as part of an operational team ensuring public spaces are kept clean, safe, tidy and well maintained.

Main Duties

  • Grass cutting and lawn maintenance
  • Operating pedestrian and ride-on mowers where trained
  • Strimming and edging grassed areas
  • Hedge cutting and general pruning
  • Weeding, hoeing and maintaining planted areas
  • Maintaining flower beds, shrubs and borders
  • Leaf clearance and seasonal grounds maintenance
  • Litter picking and keeping public areas clean and presentable
  • General clearance of vegetation and green waste
  • Planting and basic horticultural work
  • Using hand tools and powered grounds maintenance equipment
  • Loading and unloading tools, machinery and green waste
  • Assisting with the maintenance of parks, verges, communal areas and other public spaces
  • Driving council/work vehicles where required and appropriately licensed
  • Following health & safety procedures and safe working practices
  • Reporting hazards, damaged equipment or issues within public areas to the supervisor
  • Working outdoors throughout the year and in varying weather conditions

Candidate Requirements

Previous experience within grounds maintenance, gardening, landscaping, parks or a similar outdoor environment would be advantageous.

Candidates should be:

  • Physically fit and comfortable undertaking manual work
  • Reliable with good timekeeping
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team
  • Confident using basic gardening and grounds maintenance equipment
  • Health & safety conscious when working around members of the public
  • Able to follow instructions and complete scheduled work to a good standard

A full UK driving licence would be highly desirable, particularly for roles requiring travel between sites.

Qualifications or tickets covering pesticide/herbicide spraying, grounds maintenance machinery or horticulture would also be advantageous.
