We have an exciting new opportunity for a talented Health and Safety Manager to join our clients manufacturing team in Portsmouth
H&S Roles and Responsibilities:
• Maintain a robust current working knowledge of relevant H&S legislation and any developments that may affect current and future business operations.
• Ensure all H&S policies and procedures are interpreted, communicated, documented, and maintained to ensure compliance.
• Monitor the company H&S assessments and ensuring compliance with requirements, (Risk, COSHH, DSEAR etc.).
• Assist in maintaining the Environmental Management System in accordance with BS EN ISO 14001 standard, attending surveillance audits by external auditing bodies as required.
• Informing personnel of their individual duties and responsibilities regarding H&S control and management ensuring that relevant information is communicated to all levels of the organisation.
• Advise, coach, and support departmental managers to implement the environmental management system (PA02) and safety management system (PA03). The H&S Manager will guide departments to maintain best practice, promote continuous improvement and foster a strong environmental and safety culture.
• Attend relevant courses/seminars run by external sources as required.
• Conduct H&S inspections/audits, preparation of reports and raising of H&S non-compliances to monitor correction and preventative actions.
• Act as primary contact for regulatory agencies such as the Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, Fire Authorities, and other advisory bodies.
• Liaise with the HR department and the First Aid Approved Person to manage first aid requirements, including but not limited to, delegating responsibility, equipment requirements, and training.
• Assist and support in the creation, implementation, and review of documents such as, but not limited to, risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), safe working procedures, environmental impact analysis and environmental aspects register.
• Lead regular health and safety committee meetings with employee representatives.
• Liaise with department managers to control compliance areas, making sure H&S regulatory and legislative responsibility for general workplace issues, including but not limited to fire, emergency preparedness and response, and asbestos are achieved.
• Lead H&S audits to ensure system processes and procedures are efficient and frequently updated.
• Complete induction training for new employees and where applicable, provide ongoing compliance and H&S training for Portsmouth Aviation staff.
• Participate and where necessary lead on accident investigations, ensuring appropriate investigations, corrective action, and statutory reporting occurs in a timely and efficient manner.
• Ensure compliance to Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) regulations. Duties will include, but are not limited to, ensuring annual air emissions testing are completed in accordance with relevant codes of practice and chemical inventory are up to date.
• Highlight area where training/certification is required to meet the standards imposed by Legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, or H.S.E. guidance
• Measure the company’s H&S performance using performance metrics, reporting results to all levels of the business.
• Lead and supervise the H&S Department. Motivate and mentor team members to achieve their full potential and ensure that the team adheres to company policies and safety standards. Help develop the team to ensure compliance with company Policies and Procedures.
• Controlling the company’s Asbestos Register.
• Responsible for keeping your workstation clean and tidy.
• Identify training needs within their cell, encouraging team activity and involvement and the constant review of process by way of continuous improvement and communication.
• Conducting Appraisals and Probationary Reviews as directed by the HR Department.
• Liaise with your manager to identify any training requirements as part of your personal development.
• Career progression - show and take the initiative to progress skills and knowledge.
• Complete all mandatory training as required
• Any other duties as directed by the Technical & Compliance Director.
The succesful applicant will be Nebosh qualified and have experience of leading a business though an ISO45001 audit
A proven work history as an H & S Manager within a manufacturing/engineering business is essential
