HGV & Plant Engineer in Stevenage

Location: Stevenage
Salary: £60,000+ per annum, depending on experience
Hours: 7:00am – 4:30pm
Overtime: Time and a half
On-Call: 1 week per month

Our client is currently recruiting for an experienced HGV & Plant Engineer to join their team based in Stevenage.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled engineer with a strong background in HGV maintenance, plant equipment and mechanical repairs. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, repairing and testing a range of HGV vehicles, plant and associated equipment.

The role will be predominantly workshop-based at the client's Stevenage site, although there may be occasions when the successful candidate is required to work off-site.

Our client currently has two mechanics who regularly work at customer premises across Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, so there may be opportunities to attend customer sites when required.

The successful candidate will also need to be comfortable participating in an on-call rota approximately one week per month.

• Maintain, inspect, repair and test the company's HGV vehicles, plant and associated equipment.
• Prepare, present and accompany HGV vehicles, where required, for annual MOT inspections.
• Carry out periodic safety inspections on HGV vehicles in line with relevant VOSA inspection standards.
• Diagnose and repair complex hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.
• Carry out welding, fabrication and body repairs as required.
• Attend vehicle breakdowns and accident-damaged vehicles and carry out permanent or running repairs where necessary.
• Prepare and decommission vehicles, including the fitting and removal of ancillary equipment, accessories and vehicle livery.
• Complete all relevant paperwork and ensure required statistics and legal information are accurately recorded.
• Keep the workshop computer system and maintenance records updated as required.
• Attend customer sites and breakdowns when required.
• Participate in the company's on-call rota, approximately one week per month.
• Respond to breakdowns and call-outs during on-call periods where required.
• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with relevant legislation, company procedures and Health & Safety requirements.
• Maintain work areas in a clean, safe and organised condition.
• Attend training courses linked to personal development and service requirements.
• Carry out any other reasonable duties as instructed by the Company Director.
• Maintain a high standard of customer care and professionalism at all times.

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• Previous experience working as an HGV Engineer, HGV Technician, Plant Engineer or in a similar role.
• Strong mechanical maintenance and fault-finding experience.
• Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems.
• Experience preparing HGVs for MOT inspections and carrying out safety inspections.
• Welding, fabrication and body repair experience.
• The ability to diagnose faults and carry out effective repairs.
• A good understanding of relevant vehicle legislation and Health & Safety requirements.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to maintenance.
• Good communication and organisational skills.
• The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Flexibility to attend customer sites and breakdowns when required.
• A willingness to participate in an on-call rota one week per month.

• £60,000+ per annum, depending on experience
• Overtime paid at time and a half
• £15 per day on-call allowance
• £40 per hour for call-outs
• On-call approximately one week per month
