Health & Safety Advisor – Civil Engineering

Location: North East base with regular UK-wide travel
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Employment: Permanent, Full-Time
Benefits: Mileage, expenses, pension, bonus potential and 25 days’ holiday plus bank holidays

A well-established specialist civil engineering contractor is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to support a varied portfolio of live projects across the UK.

The company delivers technically challenging civil engineering, marine and heavy infrastructure schemes, including reinforced concrete structures, piling, cofferdams, harbours, quays, jetties and coastal works.

Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, you will provide practical advice, guidance and support to operational teams across multiple sites. This is a predominantly site-based position suited to someone who is confident working independently, managing their own workload and engaging effectively with employees, managers and subcontractors.

Current and forthcoming projects are located across the North East, North West, London, Kent, Norfolk and other areas throughout the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide practical health and safety advice to operational and project teams
  • Support the preparation and implementation of RAMS and safe systems of work
  • Undertake health and safety inspections and audits across multiple live sites
  • Identify hazards, areas of non-compliance and opportunities for improvement
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, audits, findings and corrective actions
  • Support compliance with company procedures and current health and safety legislation
  • Assist with HSE performance data, KPIs, monthly reporting and incident investigations
  • Coach site teams, promote positive safety behaviours and contribute to environmental and quality processes

Candidate Requirements

  • Previous experience as a Health & Safety Advisor within civil engineering, heavy civils, marine construction or a comparable construction environment
  • A minimum NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent Level 3 health and safety qualification
  • Strong knowledge of current UK health and safety legislation
  • Experience reviewing RAMS and providing practical advice to operational site teams
  • Confidence working independently across multiple live projects
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to challenge unsafe practices constructively
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied workload
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationally and stay away from home regularly

Desirable Experience

  • TechIOSH status or progress towards IOSH membership
  • Experience using digital inspection or auditing systems such as SafetyCulture or iAuditor
  • Knowledge of ISO 45001, ISO 14001 or ISO 9001
  • Experience of subcontractor monitoring, environmental matters, incident investigation or continued professional development

Travel and Working Pattern

This is not a purely office-based role. The successful candidate should expect regular UK travel, typically involving approximately three nights away from home per week, depending on project requirements.

The normal working pattern is Monday to Friday, generally 8:00am to 5:00pm, with some flexibility around start times. Time will be divided between project sites, the North East office and occasional administration and reporting.

Salary and Benefits

  • Competitive salary, dependent on experience
  • 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Seven annual-leave days reserved for the Christmas shutdown
  • Company pension contribution
  • Business mileage paid at 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles
  • Business expenses covered, including lunch expenses of up to £30 per day while travelling
  • Discretionary bonus linked to company performance, typically paid twice per year
  • Permanent employment with an established civil engineering contractor
