The Opportunity


We are seeking an experienced and motivated HV Substation Protection & Control (P&C) Design Engineer to join an established engineering team in Bellshill. This is an excellent opportunity for an electrical engineer to play a key role in the design and delivery of protection, control and automation systems for high-voltage substations.
Working across complex transmission and distribution projects, you will be involved in developing reliable protection schemes, control system designs, substation automation solutions and communication architectures that support the safe and efficient operation of critical electrical infrastructure.
You will work closely with clients, equipment manufacturers, contractors, consultants and multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver technically robust solutions that meet project requirements and relevant industry standards.



Key Responsibilities

  • Design HV substation protection and control systems for transformers, transmission lines, busbars and switchgear.
  • Develop protection philosophies, control schematics, relay settings and interlocking schemes.
  • Produce detailed protection and control drawings, schedules, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Support the development and integration of SCADA and substation automation systems.
  • Develop and review communication architectures, including IEC 61850-based solutions.
  • Undertake protection coordination, fault analysis and associated power system studies.
  • Review engineering designs and technical documentation to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, consultants and equipment suppliers throughout the design and delivery process.
  • Review third-party designs and provide technical input where required.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, site testing, commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
  • Assist with system upgrades, modifications and refurbishment projects.
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical meetings and multidisciplinary coordination.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant national, international and utility standards.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering processes, standards and design practices.


Requirements

  • Degree or HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience in HV Substation Protection & Control design.
  • Strong understanding of electrical protection, control systems and substation automation.
  • Experience with protection systems for transformers, transmission lines, busbars and HV switchgear.
  • Knowledge of relevant IEC, IEEE and ANSI standards.
  • Understanding of IEC 61850 and modern substation communication systems.
  • Experience with relevant engineering and power system software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT, EPLAN, Helinks or similar.
  • Ability to interpret and produce electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and technical drawings.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.


Desirable Experience

  • Experience working on transmission or distribution network projects.
  • Experience with major UK utilities or network operators.
  • Experience with relay configuration and protection settings.
  • Knowledge of SCADA, RTU and substation automation systems.
  • Experience supporting FAT, SAT, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Familiarity with UK utility standards and specifications.
  • Experience reviewing third-party engineering designs.
  • Chartered Engineer status or progression towards professional registration.
