Our client is a very well established and growing M&E specialist, seeking a motivated and ambitious Junior / Trainee Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your career within a supportive environment, working alongside experienced commercial managers, senior QSs, and the Operations Director across a diverse range of Electrical and Mechanical projects.

You will support the commercial management of electrical packages from pre-contract estimating through to final account settlement, gaining hands-on experience across the entire lifecycle of building services contracts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide clear, accurate, and timely commercial reporting and advice to clients, project teams, and senior management.
  • Support Electrical Project Managers and senior commercial staff in managing subcontract packages and project variations.
  • Track project progress against commercial deadlines and regularly update senior management on margin and cash flow performance.
  • Prepare professional tender documentation, interim applications, and commercial reports in line with company standards.
  • Attend client, M&E consultant, and main contractor meetings, recording accurate notes and action points.
  • Carry out site visits to complete measure-offs, assess progress on cable pulls, containment, and second-fix installations.

Core Duties: Working alongside the Operations Director, responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with monthly project cost reports (CVRs) and electrical commercial updates.
  • Preparing cost plans, approximate estimates, electrical Schedules of Rates, and detailed Bills of Quantities (BoQs).
  • Supporting specialist procurement activities, including electrical materials, switchgear, containment, and sub-contractor tender analysis.
  • Assisting with the administration of subcontracts (JCT / NEC) tailored to M&E services.
  • Preparing interim valuations, assessing sub-contractor payment applications, managing variations/EWNs, and settling final accounts.
  • Maintaining and updating electrical cost databases, pricing schedules, and rate benchmarking.
  • Supporting formal change control processes for scope variations across both pre-contract and post-contract stages.

About You:

  • An interest in Quantity surveying and perhaps a relevant qualification (HND, BSc, or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying, Building Services, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Previous commercial experience or placement exposure within an M&E sub-contractor,  commercial QS environment is desirable.
  • A genuine desire to build a successful career within the M&E and electrical engineering sectors.
  • Strong numerical skills with an aptitude for reading drawings and understanding specifications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A full UK driving licence (desirable for site visits across Bedfordshire and London).
  • Professionalism, humour and the grit required for a fast-paced contracting environment.
