Loading Shovel Operator

Role Purpose

The Loading Shovel Operator plays a vital role in supporting the site's daily operations by ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous movement of materials to meet production requirements. The successful candidate will operate a wheeled loading shovel safely and effectively while complying with site permits, company policies, and all Health & Safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a wheeled loading shovel to load, move, and stockpile materials in line with production requirements.
  • Maintain a continuous supply of raw materials to the PB and MDF production facilities.
  • Carry out stock rotation, ensuring the first material in is the first material out (FIFO).
  • Complete daily pre-start inspections and basic maintenance checks, reporting any defects promptly.
  • Keep the loading shovel clean, fuelled, and in good working condition.
  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping across operational areas.
  • Ensure all work is carried out safely, following site rules, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
  • Remain vigilant to potential hazards and proactively contribute to maintaining a safe working environment for colleagues, contractors, and visitors.
  • Conduct visual inspections of incoming materials where required and report any non-conforming loads to site management.
  • Communicate effectively with production teams and site management to ensure efficient material flow.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve safety, efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Assist with other site operational duties as required to support the wider team.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience operating a wheeled loading shovel in an industrial, recycling, quarrying, or manufacturing environment.
  • Valid mobile plant operator certificate for a wheeled loading shovel.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Strong awareness of Health & Safety and safe operating practices.
  • Ability to carry out daily machine inspections and identify defects.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Reliable with excellent timekeeping.
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivated approach.
  • Practical problem-solving skills.
  • Flexible approach to working hours and operational requirements.

Desirable

  • Experience within a manufacturing, timber, recycling, or waste environment.
  • 360 material handler (grab) certificate.
  • Experience using weighbridge or stock management systems.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge for routine equipment care.
