Maintenance Engineer (Electrical Bias) 4 on 4 off

Major Talent

Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer (Electrical Bias)

£57,750 per annum | 4 on 4 off Shift Pattern

Our client is a long-established British food production business in Rochester with a strong heritage spanning over 75 years. Operating at scale, the site is a highly automated fresh produce packing and distribution environment where engineering reliability directly drives production performance.

This is a rare opportunity for a hands-on Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer (electrically biased) to join a small, established engineering team. You will be the fourth engineer in a tight-knit function, working closely with an Engineering Manager and experienced multi-skilled colleagues.

The environment is fast-moving, highly automated, and heavily reliant on rapid fault resolution to maintain throughput across complex packing and grading systems.

The Role:

This is a true site-based maintenance engineering role, with a strong emphasis on reactive breakdown response, supported by structured preventative maintenance.

You will be responsible for keeping all production and site equipment operational, ensuring downtime is kept to an absolute minimum across a continuous packing operation.

The work is varied, combining electrical fault finding, mechanical repair, and general site maintenance across a wide range of automated food production equipment.

Shift Pattern:

4 on 4 off rotating shift system

Typical coverage:

  • 12:00 - 00:00 is the standard shift
  • 07:00 - 19:00 (occasional rotation)
  • 09:00 - 21:00 during quieter operational periods

Salary & Benefits:

£57,750 per annum

In addition to a competitive salary, the package includes:

  • Enhanced holiday allowance with long service progression
  • Company pension scheme
  • Fortnightly pay
  • Private GP access
  • Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
  • Eyecare support
  • Full CMMS and engineering systems training support
  • Learning and development platform
  • Employee discount scheme
  • Free onsite parking
  • Company accommodation where required
  • Regular staff engagement initiatives and rewards

Key Equipment:

You will work across a highly automated production environment including:

  • High-speed packing and flow wrapping lines
  • Robotic case packing and palletising systems
  • Shrink wrapping and strapping equipment
  • Conveyor and transfer systems
  • Pneumatic and hydraulic systems
  • Pumps and auxiliary site services
  • Integrated packaging and automation machinery

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond rapidly to electrical and mechanical breakdowns across production equipment
  • Diagnose faults using structured troubleshooting and root cause analysis techniques
  • Deliver planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to reduce downtime and improve reliability
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on uptime and efficiency
  • Work closely with production teams to coordinate maintenance and minimise disruption
  • Assist with installation, commissioning and modification of new equipment
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records via CMMS systems
  • Manage and replenish critical spare parts inventory
  • Carry out site maintenance including electrical installations, lighting and general services
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in line with Health & Safety standards
  • Contribute to long-term reliability improvements and failure prevention strategies

About You:

This role suits an engineer who is confident working under pressure in a fast-paced production environment and enjoys hands-on fault finding.

You will ideally have:

  • Experience as a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer in manufacturing, FMCG, food production or packaging
  • Strong electrical bias with solid mechanical capability
  • Proven experience in breakdown repair and fault diagnosis
  • PLC fault finding and diagnostic experience
  • Strong problem-solving ability and a structured approach to fault finding
  • Good communication skills and ability to work across production and engineering teams
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety in an industrial environment

Qualifications:

One or more of the following (or equivalent):

  • Electrical Apprenticeship
  • NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds
  • ONC / HNC Engineering
  • 17th or 18th Edition Wiring Regulations

Why This Role

This is an opportunity to join a modern, heavily automated production environment where engineering is central to operational success. You will be part of a small, experienced team where your ability to diagnose faults quickly and keep production running will have immediate impact.

If you are a strong electrically biased engineer who enjoys solving problems in a fast-moving environment, this role offers both challenge and stability in equal measure.
