The Role
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Machinist to join an established precision engineering and manufacturing environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for manufacturing precision components and sub-assemblies using a range of manual machine tools, working from engineering drawings, specifications and detailed work instructions.
This is a hands-on machining position suited to an experienced machinist with a strong background in manual turning and cylindrical/surface grinding, who takes pride in producing accurate, high-quality components.
The role will also involve supporting tooling modifications, continuous improvement and Lean manufacturing activities across the workshop.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and operate manual centre lathes to manufacture precision components.
- Set and operate cylindrical and/or surface grinding machines.
- Machine components accurately to engineering drawings, specifications and tight tolerances.
- Modify and manufacture tooling including jigs, fixtures, templates, dies and moulds.
- Set out and verify component dimensions using precision measuring and marking equipment.
- Use micrometres, verniers, dial indicators, height gauges and other inspection equipment.
- Interpret engineering drawings, dimensions, tolerances and basic geometric calculations.
- Work efficiently to agreed production times and routing requirements while maintaining quality standards.
- Accurately record production time and completed work using relevant manufacturing systems.
- Maintain high standards of quality throughout the machining process.
- Support the workshop with general machining and associated manufacturing duties where required.
- Contribute to Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
- Participate in structured problem-solving activities, including 5S, Kaizen and root cause analysis.
- Identify opportunities to improve workshop processes, efficiency and working practices.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working environment.
- Ensure all machinery, tools and equipment are operated safely and in accordance with company procedures.
- Report any defects, hazards, accidents or near misses promptly.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties in support of manufacturing requirements.
The Candidate
Proven experience setting and operating manual centre lathes.
Experience using cylindrical and/or surface grinding machines.
Strong precision engineering and manual machining background.
Ability to work accurately from engineering drawings and specifications.
Experience machining components to tight tolerances.
Experience manufacturing or modifying jigs, fixtures, templates, dies or moulds.
Confident using a range of precision measuring equipment.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
Flexible approach with the ability to support a variety of workshop requirements.
Able to work independently and as part of a wider engineering team.
