Mechanical Design Engineer

Lawrence Harvey

Mechanical Design Engineer (Robotics Start-Up)

Want to design a robot that doesn’t just look good in CAD - but actually performs in the real world?

A scaling robotics company is building an autonomous system designed to operate in demanding, real-world environments across AgriTech.

They’re focused on robust, serviceable, and manufacturable hardware that can be deployed and maintained at scale.

They’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership of the physical product - from CAD through to assembly, supplier engagement, and real-world deployment. This is a hands-on role where you’re expected to stay close to the hardware and the field.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own the design of mechanical components and assemblies for the robot, managing CAD through multiple product iterations
  • Take ownership of the BOM, ensuring accuracy, version control, and alignment with procurement and production
  • Work directly with suppliers - sourcing components, requesting quotes, managing lead times, and building strong relationships
  • Support and improve assembly processes, creating clear documentation and getting hands-on where needed
  • Spend time in the field - attending deployments, customer sites, and trials to understand real-world performance
  • Collaborate closely with embedded systems and software teams to ensure seamless integration of sensors, wiring, and hardware
  • Support product certification (CE marking, machinery directive), contributing to technical documentation and compliance testing
  • Identify and implement design improvements based on field feedback, manufacturing constraints, and cost optimisation

What They’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design or product engineering (robotics, machinery, or industrial equipment preferred)
  • Strong proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent)
  • Experience managing BOMs and working with suppliers/manufacturers
  • Hands-on experience with assembly and building physical products
  • Comfort working in the field and engaging with real-world deployments
  • Exposure to product certification processes (CE marking, machinery directive, etc.) is a strong plus
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working across multiple workstreams in a fast-moving startup

Hybrid/On-site working in Porto, Portugal.
