MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER – DATA CENTRES & CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE
Mech Electrics are recruiting for a long-standing client we've proudly worked with for over 15 years, helping them recruit engineering professionals as the business has grown into one of the UK's leading specialists in critical infrastructure.
We're now looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their expanding Critical Infrastructure team.
This is a particularly interesting opportunity for a Mechanical Building Services Engineer who wants to see their designs become reality.
Rather than working solely within consultancy, you'll become involved across the complete project lifecycle – developing tender concepts, progressing secured projects through detailed design and ultimately supporting construction, commissioning and handover.
THE ROLE
You'll design mechanical infrastructure for technically demanding environments where resilience, efficiency and reliability are fundamental.
Projects are predominantly within the Data Centre and Critical Infrastructure sectors and include sophisticated cooling and mechanical systems designed around resilient, continuously operational environments.
You'll work closely with clients, contractors, specialist suppliers and the wider in-house engineering team, with the opportunity to act as Lead Mechanical Designer on mechanically biased projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop mechanical designs from tender concept through detailed construction stages.
• Design chilled water and high-efficiency cooling systems for critical environments.
• Produce mechanical schematics, specifications, calculations and technical submissions.
• Develop designs through the relevant RIBA stages and support construction delivery.
• Review client specifications, drawings and technical requirements.
• Carry out site surveys and develop practical engineering solutions.
• Coordinate with contractors, specialist suppliers, system integrators and other designers.
• Review technical and material submissions and support commissioning activities.
• Contribute technically to tenders, proposals and client presentations.
• Attend client and project meetings and confidently explain engineering solutions.
ABOUT YOU
We're looking for someone with a genuine Mechanical Building Services background and a good understanding of how systems are designed, installed and commissioned.
Ideally you'll have:
• HNC/HND, degree or equivalent experience within Mechanical or Building Services Engineering.
• Strong mechanical design knowledge, particularly HVAC, cooling and associated building services.
• Experience within Data Centres or Critical Infrastructure would be highly advantageous, but isn't essential.
• A practical, commercially aware approach and confidence dealing directly with clients.
Experience may have been gained with an M&E contractor, specialist contractor or Building Services consultancy. For consultancy candidates, we're particularly interested in people who enjoy getting close to construction and seeing their engineering solutions delivered on site.
THE OPPORTUNITY
This isn't a role where you'll spend your career producing drawings that disappear into somebody else's construction team.
You'll work within an engineering-led contractor where Design, Pre-Construction and Operations work closely together, giving you visibility of projects from the first client conversation through to completed installation.
The business continues to grow across the UK and internationally, providing genuine long-term progression for technically ambitious engineers.
