Salary: £16.94ph – £32,592 per annum
Hours: Monday – Thursday 7:45am – 5:00pm & Friday 7:45am – 10:45am
Job Summary
An experienced White Metal Engineering Fitter is required for the manufacture, refurbishment, fitting, and repair of white metal (Babbitt) bearings and associated mechanical components. The role involves precision fitting, scraping, machining support, and inspection to ensure bearings meet exact engineering specifications, supporting the repair and maintenance of rotating machinery within workshop and industrial environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Manufacture, refurbish, and repair white metal (Babbitt) bearings
- Hand-fit bearings to achieve correct clearances, alignment, and operational performance
- Carry out precision scraping and fitting techniques to achieve required tolerances
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and work instructions
- Measure and inspect components using precision equipment (micrometers, dial indicators, bore gauges, vernier calipers)
- Assist with machining operations to support bearing manufacture and refurbishment
- Inspect finished components to ensure compliance with customer and engineering specifications
- Identify defects or wear and recommend appropriate repair methods
- Complete job documentation, inspection reports, and quality records accurately
- Maintain a clean, organised, and safe working environment
- Follow all company health & safety, quality, and environmental procedures
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proven experience as a White Metal Fitter, White Metal Bearing Fitter, Bearing Fitter, or Mechanical Fitter
- Strong understanding of white metal (Babbitt) materials, bearing clearances, lubrication systems, and fitting techniques
- Skilled in precision scraping, fitting, assembly, and measurement
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and technical specifications
- Experience working with rotating machinery such as turbines, pumps, compressors, motors, and generators
- Competent in the use of precision measuring equipment
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding abilities
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
Education & Experience
- Recognised engineering apprenticeship or technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Fitting, or related discipline
- Previous experience in white metal bearing manufacture, refurbishment, or bearing engineering
- Experience within heavy engineering, power generation, marine, or industrial maintenance environments advantageous
Working Conditions
- Workshop and industrial site environments; manual handling of heavy components
- PPE required at all times; physically demanding tasks
- Site work, shutdowns, call-outs, and overtime may be required
- Occasional travel to customer sites may be required
