As an On-Track Maintenance Train Day Maintainer, you will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and condition of a specialist rail maintenance machine.
The fleet includes specialist on-rack maintenance machines, which are used to maintain and correct railway track geometry. These are substantial pieces of engineering equipment incorporating mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electronic systems.
You don't need previous experience working on this specific type of machine. Full training will be provided.
This is a field-based engineering position rather than a traditional workshop or depot-based role.
You will normally be dedicated to one machine operating within your allocated geographical area. This gives you the opportunity to develop detailed knowledge of your machine and take genuine ownership of its maintenance, condition and reliability.
The machines are mobile, so you will travel to wherever your allocated train is operating and housed in a depot or a siding. A company van and fuel card are provided for you to travel to the trains location.
There may occasionally be a requirement to support another machine, for example during periods of holiday cover or operational requirements. This can involve travel outside your normal area and potentially staying away from home.
What You'll Be Doing
Your responsibilities will include:
- Planned preventative maintenance
- Daily and weekly maintenance activities
- Supporting scheduled 1, 3 and 6-month maintenance requirements
- Mechanical and electrical fault finding
- Working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Diagnosing equipment faults and defects
- Carrying out minor mechanical and electrical repairs
- Reporting defects requiring further engineering support
- Supporting Field Service Engineers with more complex repairs
- Carrying out machine inspections
- Operating the machine when required for maintenance purposes
- Monitoring the condition and performance of your allocated machine
- Ordering required parts and equipment
- Managing stock levels
- Coordinating fuel and material deliveries where required
- Completing maintenance records and documentation
- Maintaining excellent housekeeping and 5S standards
- Working in accordance with rail safety procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work
- The role is normally rostered at approximately 160 hours over a four-week period, including two weekends out of four.
- There are also opportunities to work additional paid overtime.
- As this is a mobile field engineering position supporting operational railway maintenance equipment, flexibility around travel is required.
- You will normally remain with your allocated machine within your geographical area. However, there may occasionally be a requirement to travel outside your normal patch and stay away from home depending on operational requirements.
We are looking for engineers with hands-on maintenance and fault-finding experience.
You could currently be working as a:
- Mechanical Maintenance Engineer
- Electrical Maintenance Engineer
- Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer
- Field Service Engineer
- Plant Fitter / Plant Engineer
- HGV Technician / HGV Mechanic
- Agricultural Engineer
- Heavy Equipment Engineer
- Manufacturing Maintenance Engineer
- Industrial Maintenance Engineer
- Mobile Service Engineer
- Armed Forces / Military Engineer
You will ideally have completed a time-served engineering apprenticeship or hold a recognised Mechanical, Electrical or Maintenance Engineering qualification.
About You:
You should be:
- Experienced in hands-on engineering maintenance
- Confident with mechanical and/or electrical fault finding
- Comfortable working with complex machinery
- Able to work independently in a field-based environment
- Safety conscious and comfortable following strict procedures
- Organised with good attention to detail
- Able to complete maintenance documentation accurately
- IT literate
- Willing to undertake technical and rail competence training
- Flexible regarding travel
- Comfortable taking responsibility for your allocated machine
- Keen to develop a long-term engineering career
You do not need previous rail experience to be considered for this position.
Full structured training will be provided to develop your knowledge of the On-Track Maintenance Train, its systems, rail maintenance procedures and the competencies required to work safely within the railway environment.
If you already maintain HGVs, plant machinery, agricultural equipment, manufacturing machinery, industrial equipment or other complex mechanical/electrical systems, you could have highly transferable skills for this position.
This is an excellent opportunity to move into a specialist rail engineering environment while receiving the training required to develop your career.
